Violinist Marja Tuhkanen and the cellist Bertrand Galen (both fresh from performing with the Irish band Interference) also collaborated on the album. It was released on April 21st, 2006 (coinciding with Hansard's 36th birthday).
Hansard and Marketa starred together in the film 'Once' by writer/director John Carney (a former bass player of The Frames). Many songs of the album The Swell Season were used in this film, which won the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance 2007. Falling Slowly won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song. In Once, according to the Falling Slowly Songfacts, Hansard played an Irish busker who has a romantic relationship with Irglova's Czech flower seller. Bob Dylan was so taken by the film that he asked Hansard and Irglova to be the opening act on his world tour. For more info: http://www.myspace.com/oncethemovie

Once
Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Won't return
And part of me wants to hide
The part that's purr (pure?)
Once, once
I knew how to talk to you
Once, once
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Part of me has died
To watch it burn
And the heart of me has tried
Look what it's become
Once, once
I knew how to look for you
Once, once
But that was before
Once, once
I would have laid down and died for you
Once, once
But not any more
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
The lyrics to Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová's Once are an introspective and emotional reflection on a past relationship. The singer of the song is grappling with the aftermath of the relationship, which has left them feeling like a part of them has died and wanting to hide. The contrast between the past and present is highlighted in the chorus with the repetition of "once, once, but not anymore," emphasizing how the singer has changed since they knew how to talk to or look for the person they once would have laid down and died for.
The repetition of "hear the sirens, call me home" encapsulates the emptiness the singer is experiencing, feeling lost and directionless, wanting to be called back to a place that no longer exists. The second verse adds an element of regret to the song, with the singer suggesting they watched part of themselves die while also acknowledging the ways their heart has tried, yet still feeling a sense of disappointment in what it's become.
The song's haunting melody and lyrics have struck a chord with many listeners, capturing the universal themes of love, regret, and longing. It's a powerful reminder that even the strongest relationships can end, leaving behind a sense of emptiness that can take time to heal.

Lyrics
I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You'll make it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
And moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
Well, you have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly, sing your melody
I'll sing along
Take it all
I played the cards too late
Now you're gone

Everyone who was part of this movie should be proud for the rest of their lives: an irish independent production with a small budget of a few thousand dollars conquered the world, and this song ended up winning an Oscar. That's absolutely incredible. It is still one of my favorite movies, it's raw, it's real.. I couldn't ask for anything more.
