How many times was I lost
And how many times I'd be drown in the sea
If you weren't there to rescue me
We're sailing, we're sailing every night
We're drifting, we're drifting alone apart
Not to show that we're in need
How many times have I hurt you
How many times have you
And how many times I'd been on my knees
Begging, begging please forgive me
We're sailing, we're sailing every night
We're drifting, we're drifting alone apart
Not to show that we're in need
But I'd heal your wounds if you bleed
Thank you for being so patient with me
I've been weaker than I ought to be
Despair and jealousy blinded my mind
And I couldn't see how you're trying for me
The song Alone Apart by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová speaks about the ups and downs of a romantic relationship. The lyrics suggest that the couple has been through a lot together, including times of being lost and needing rescuing from one another. The song suggests that despite these trials, the bond between them remains strong, as they continue to sail and drift through life, even when they feel alone apart.
The lyrics also speak about moments of hurt and pain in the relationship, and how both parties might have hurt each other in the past. However, the willingness to forgive each other, and the desire to heal each other's wounds, is evident in the chorus. The authenticity in the lyrics is immense and deeply relatable; it shows that a healthy relationship is not flawless, but it is about working through challenges and being there for one another, even in the darkest moments.
