Darkest Hour
Glen Phillips and Nickel Creek Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just remind me, just remind me
When my shadow's longer
Stay beside me till it's brighter
How easily I forget
How beautiful to see it once again
In my darkest hour I will be freed
When I close my eyes
When I leave my body
I want to be ready, willing like you were
I sat beside you then
I felt the warmth as it left your hands
I've been waiting so long
That waiting was the end
Let this sleeper awaken again
The lyrics of Glen Phillips's song Darkest Hour depict the singer's struggle with faith and the desire to find comfort in these trying times. The singer is calling out for a reminder to keep holding on to their faith when they lose it, asking someone to stay by their side when they feel lost and to help them see the beauty in life once again. The singer acknowledges how easy it is to forget and wants to be reminded of the beauty once again as it would help to free them from their darkest hour.
The second half of the song speaks of the singer's desire to be "ready" like someone they sat beside who they felt the warmth leave their hands. The singer wants to be at peace with their faith and hope to find that peacefulness when they close their eyes. They acknowledge that they have been waiting for so long that the waiting was the end and they just want to awaken again from this slumber.

This song pulls at my heartstrings in so many ways. I think of my sweet "soulmate" dog, Phoenix, who passed last year... I'm not over his passing. I also think of my parents. I miss them all so much.

Song is amazing...Oh, yeah, depressing as hell.

Amazing indeed. But I've always found it quite uplifting in a 'one day I hope to be able to accept the fact that I'm going to die' kind of way. :)

It’s about the death of his dad. He tells the story before playing it in one of the other YouTube videos. Says he was alone with him when he died while everyone else was in the other room eating spaghetti. That it was somehow peaceful and beautiful.
