Route 66
Glenn Frey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you ever plan to motor west
Travel my way, take the highway that is best
Get your kicks on route sixty-six
It winds from Chicago to L.A.
More than two thousand miles all the way
Get your kicks on route sixty-six

Now you go through Saint Louis
Joplin, Missouri
And Oklahoma city looks oh so pretty
You see Amarillo
Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona
Don't forget Winona
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino

Won't you get hip to this timely tip
Go and take that California trip
Get your kicks on route sixty-six

Now you go through Saint Louis
Joplin, Missouri
And Oklahoma city looks oh so pretty
You see Amarillo
Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona
Don't forget Winona
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino

Won't you get hip to this timely tip
Go and take that California trip
Get your kicks on route sixty-six

Overall Meaning

Glenn Frey's "Route 66" is a joyful celebration of the famous highway that stretches from Chicago to L.A. The lyrics suggest that if one wants to cross the United States, traveling via Route 66 is the way to do it. The song mentions several of these locations, from Saint Louis to Barstow, and emphasizes how these places can be seen while traveling down Route 66.

The lyrics are a tribute to the thrill of traveling from one place to another, experiencing different cultures and seeing new sights. This is exemplified by the phrase "Get your kicks on Route 66" and repeated throughout the song. By exploring what America has to offer, one can get their kicks, or derive pleasure or satisfaction, by seeing what different parts of the country have to offer. RIP Glenn you wrote the soundtrack for a lot of peoples lives. You will be missed.

I was in a funk when Glenn passed away and couldn't listen to any Eagles song for over a year. The Eagles are my favorite band and Glenn is my favorite Eagle

This video is an audio and visual treat, his joy and love of music is evident in every move, every second the music plays. Very grateful to Glenn Frey for sharing that love with us.

I recently found this legendary mans music and I just love it! It's such a shame that Glenn Frey passed away so soon. You will always be remembered for your amazing music!

Just 'kickin'! Glen shows us his versatility - he could sing the phone book and I'd like it! Love the piano samples (9' Yamaha?) and pedal steel. Glen even gets into the act - blows the smoke off those smokin' guns!! Very nice. We'll miss you.

It's bittersweet to see Glenn in this clip, and others from the last decade or so of his life. You could tell in appearances that he was becoming very stooped over from the arthritis, which caused the chronic colitis that eventually killed him (by way of the drugs he was taking for it). Such a wonderful man he seemed to be, and such a tender, sweet voice he had. RIP Glenn.
