Crosstown
Glenn Miller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every night at eight you'll find me
Waitin' for a bus to take me crosstown
Someone I adore is waitin' for me
By the door way over crosstown

I used to go uptown but that romance fell through
I used to go downtown but she found someone new
Never realized they advertised
So many things to fill a blue room
I can even see the day that we will
Have a little tea-for-two room

I found a real sweetheart
Who'll never let me down

Haven't time to fuss, I'll miss the bus,
And maybe baby will be cross, crosstown

Overall Meaning

The song Crosstown by Glenn Miller perfectly encapsulates the feeling of anticipation and excitement as the singer waits for his lover in a different part of town. The opening lines "Every night at eight you'll find me, Waitin' for a bus to take me crosstown" sets the scene for the entire song. The singer is clearly very dedicated to his lover and is willing to travel across town every night just to be with her. As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer has had some romantic disappointments in the past but has now found someone who he truly adores in the "little tea-for-two room" that they will share someday.

The second verse is particularly interesting because it highlights the commonality of heartbreak and disappointment in love. The singer notes that he used to go uptown and downtown, but both of those relationships ultimately ended in disappointment. However, now that he has found his true love, he knows that he has found someone who will never let him down. In this verse, the singer is also reflecting on the ups and downs of love, acknowledging the pain and the potential for new beginnings.

AMO as músicas desse tempo!!!!

Trombonology Erstwhile

Jack Lathrop's association with GM went back to 1935, when both were working in Ray Noble's American band -- Jack as a member of The Freshman vocal group and Glenn as arranger-trombonist. The Freshman became The Tune Twisters and recorded with Glenn's pre-success 1937 band. On "Crosstown" we can appreciate that unassuming, likeable quality in his pleasant tone.

Good info. It's The Freshmen, BTW.

Trombonology Erstwhile

@jja kiefte Thank you. Yes, "Freshmen" -- plural, obviously. Merely an unintentional typo.
