During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Miller managed to earn a living working as a freelance trombonist in several bands. His first band was formed in 1937 but failed to distinguish itself and eventually broke up.
Following the break-up of his first band, Miller realized that he needed to develop a unique sound, and decided to make the clarinet play a melodic line with a tenor saxophone on the same note, while three other saxophones harmonized. With this sound combination, the Miller band that became the most popular was born in 1938. After a shaky start, it made his new band a nationwide hit.
In 1942, Miller joined the United States Army Air Forces where he continued his musical career with the Army Air Force Band.
On December 15, 1944, Miller was to fly from the United Kingdom to Paris, France, to play for the soldiers who had recently liberated Paris. His plane departed from RAF Twinwood Farm in Clapham, Bedfordshire and disappeared while flying over the English Channel. No trace of the aircrew, passengers or plane has ever been found. Miller's status is missing in action.
His music is still iconic of the time period in which he lived and continues to draw thousands of fans of all age groups.
Glenn Miller was a popular visitor to Bedford and its American Air force bases. He is still remembered to this day by the people of Bedford with a bronze bust displayed on the front of the towns Corn Exchange, and more recently, what remains of the Twinwoods Airfield being renovated as a Glenn Miller Museum and outdoor event site

Over the Rainbow
Glenn Miller Lyrics

There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
High above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
Glenn Miller’s rendition of “Over the Rainbow” is an enchanting and timeless classic that has inspired generations of listeners. The opening lines of the song—"Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high / There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby"—suggest a longing for a place far away from the harsh realities of the world. The singer of the song sings of a mystical, idyllic land that he has only heard of in dreams and lullabies. It is a place where the skies are eternally blue and the dreams that one dares to dream truly come true.
Miller’s version of the song also draws attention to the idea of hope, and the power that it has to keep a person going even in the bleakest of circumstances. The lyrics suggest that someday, the singer will wish upon a star and find himself transported away from all his troubles, and into a world where lemon drops are what troubled are made of. The imagery here is evocative and poignant, conjuring up a world of pure magic and wonder that is almost too beautiful to contemplate.
Finally, the last verse of the song - "Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue / Birds fly over the rainbow / Why then, oh why can't I?" - is a haunting question that lingers in the mind long after the song has come to an end. The image of birds flying over the rainbow serves as a symbol of freedom and endless possibility, leaving the listener with an intense desire to break free from the restrictions of their own life and follow those birds beyond the rainbow into a world of infinite potential.
