Waarom
Glennis Grace Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain

I've lived a life that's full
I've traveled each and every highway
Oh, and more, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption

I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
But more, much more than this
I did it my way

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
Had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside
I find it all so amusing

To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way
"Oh no, oh no not me
I did it my way"

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way

The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way

Overall Meaning

Glennis Grace's song Waarom, which means "Why" in English, is a Dutch-language adaptation of the famous Frank Sinatra classic "My Way". The song is a powerful ballad about the journey of life and the choices we make. In the first verse, the singer acknowledges that the end is near and they are facing the final curtain. This is a metaphor for the end of life, and the singer is accepting that their time is coming to an end. However, they also state that they have lived a full life and have no regrets. They have traveled each and every highway and have done so on their own terms, hence "I did it my way."

The second verse talks about regrets, and the singer admits to having a few but asserts that they are too few to mention. They have done what they had to do in life and have seen it through without needing any exemption. The singer planned their course and took careful steps along the byway, but they also trusted their instincts and made decisions based on what they felt was right for them. This is the essence of "I did it my way."

The chorus drives the point home with conviction, saying that everyone faces challenges in life, but it's how they face them that counts. The singer has faced everything life has thrown their way and has done so with their head held high, never once compromising on their principles. The final lines of the song assert that a person is nothing if they cannot be true to themselves and express their true feelings. The record shows that the singer took the blows and did it their way.

The original song is "comme d'habitude" from Claude Francois in 1969, a sad love song when love is finished even if the couple is still at home . The song has been re-written in english in "my way", always by Paul Anka with a different story . When Frank Sinatra sang it, it became an international success . Claude Francois was one of the best french singer from 1962 to 1978 . He died accidentally by electricity . His early disco song "Alexandrie Alexandra" and "Magnolias for ever" are still played in the parties, weddings, etc ....
