Gloria
Gloria Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And there she goes
The last one on the boat
The last one going home
Heading for the sunset

The white stripes on the road
The pink pearls come and go
The darkness in my soul
To a place we haven't known yet

And I just want to hold your hand
Until we go
Dont leave me alone

The bubbles in my eyes
Keep me feeling blind
Stops me to unwind
I just want to let go

The snake upon the hill
Hits me with a chill
Makes me want to kill you

And I just want to hold your hand

Until we go
Dont leave me alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gloria and Company's song "Gloria" create a melancholic and introspective mood. The opening lines describe the departure of the last person on a boat and the sense of finality that comes with it. The imagery of the white stripes on the road and the pink pearls coming and going further adds to the feeling of fleetingness and impermanence. The singer then reveals the darkness in their soul and a yearning to go somewhere they haven't been before.

The chorus of the song is a plea for companionship and comfort. The singer wants to hold someone's hand as they journey to an unknown destination, and they're afraid of being left alone. The bubble in their eyes and the feeling of being blind signify a sense of confusion and uncertainty, and they want to let go of their worries.

The final lines of the song take a darker turn as the singer is hit with a chill upon seeing a snake on a hill. The sense of fear and danger the snake symbolizes makes them want to lash out and kill someone, adding another layer of complexity to the emotional state of the song's protagonist.

Overall, Gloria and Company's "Gloria" is a haunting and introspective song that explores themes of loneliness, impermanence, and the need for human connection.

This song always reminds me of my mother. She had a pretty hard life, 2 divorces one from an abusive alcoholic, raised 4 kids, and died at 42 of cancer. But on occasion this song would play on the radio and she'd forget her worries for just a moment and sing it like Laura Brangahan herself. My best memories was when I was in college and we went to 2 weddings within 2 years and we danced to this practically clearing that dance floor. I just remember her wide smile and how happy she was in the moment. After the 2nd wedding, she was gone by the following year, but before she went I played this for her in the hospital and tho she couldn't sing, she flashed that signature smile. This song will forever and always be her song to me.

What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing. My mother has passed too. These memories are worth more than pure gold, I do know :)
