The lyrics of Gloria Estefan's song Mi Tierra express deep emotions towards the singer's homeland, Cuba. The opening lines describe the beauty and holiness of the country, however, the next few lines convey the pain and sadness felt by those who have been forced to leave their country due to various reasons. The sounds of drums and tambourines are heard, along with the crying of a brother who now lives far away from his homeland but is deeply connected to it. He sings a song that speaks of his own pain and sadness, as he remembers his beloved country.
The lyrics continue with the idea that the land is an integral part of one's soul and identity, and even when a person is away from it, it still has a strong hold on them. The soil, the air, and the sounds of the country are all a part of their being and cannot be forgotten. The pain and longing of a person away from their country is described as a feeling that penetrates deep into one's soul, causing an ache that cannot be ignored.
As the song continues, the singer speaks of the many people who are still in Cuba, still singing their songs and lamenting their loss. The guajiro, a rural peasant, sings son, a traditional Cuban music genre, with the moon as his only witness. The streets of the country are filled with the same melancholic sounds of loss and remembrance, as the nostalgia of the singer's homeland reaches her heart.
Mi Tierra is a powerful and emotional song that conveys the deep connection and love that people have for their homeland, even when they are far away from it. The pain of leaving and the longing for home are feelings that are expressed through the lyrics and music, making it a classic song that transcends cultural and national boundaries.

I hear the call of the drums and timbales playing, singing the songs of my brother who lives far from his homeland and remembers it with tears, a song that reflects his pain and sadness.
Oigo ese grito de los tambores
I hear the cry of the drums
Y los timbales al cumbanchar
And the timbales playing the cumbia rhythm
Y ese pregón que canta un hermano
And my brother singing his plaintive song
Que de su tierra vive lejano
Remembering his homeland from afar
Y que el recuerdo le hace llorar
And feeling a deep sadness
Una canción que vive entonando
A song that he always sings
De su dolor de su propio llanto
Reflecting his own pain and tears
Y se le escucha penar
And his sorrow can be heard in his voice
The land both gives and hurts you
Deep in your soul, when you are not there
The land roots and connects you
The land sighs if it no longer sees you
La tierra donde naciste
The land you were born in
No la puedes olvidar
You cannot forget it
Porque tiene tus raíces
Because it is where your roots are
Y lo que dejas atrás
And all that you leave behind
Siguen los pregones, la melancolía
The laments and melancholy continue
Y cada noche junto a la luna
Every night by the moonlight
Sigue el guajiro entonando el son
The farmer continues singing his song
Every street that leads to my hometown
Tiene un quejido, tiene un lamento
Has a complaint, has a lament
Tiene nostalgia como su voz
Has a voice filled with nostalgia
Y esa canción que sigue entonando
And that song that keeps being sung
Corre en la sangre y sigue llegando
Runs through the blood and keeps coming
Con más fuerza al corazón
With even more strength to the heart
La llevo por dentro como no
I carry it inside of me like nothing else
Canto de mi tierra bella y santa
Singing about my beautiful and holy land
Feeling the pain that exists in its soul
Aunque esté lejos yo la siento
Even though I am far away I still feel it
Y un día regreso yo lo sé
And I know that one day I will return
Tiene un quejido (mi tierra)
Has a complaint (my land)
Tiene un lamento (mi tierra)
Has a lament (my land)
Nunca la olvido (mi tierra)
I never forget it (my land)
I carry it in my heart, yes sir (my land)
Oigo ese grito (mi tierra)
I hear that cry (my land)
Vive el recuerdo (mi tierra)
The memory lives on (my land)
Corre en mi sangre (mi tierra)
Runs through my blood (my land)
The land sighs if it no longer sees you
