Ambition
Godard Vic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You can take it or leave it as far as we're concerned
Because we're not concerned with you.
What you want is buried in the present tense
Blind alleyways allay the jewels".

I am a dried-up seed can't be restored
I hope no-one notices the sleep on me.
I've been walking along down this shallow slope
Looking for nothing particularly.

Am I guided or is this life for free
Because nothing ever seems to happen to me.

And I won't be tempted by vile evils
Because vile evils are vile evils...

Overall Meaning

In the verses of Godard Vic's "Ambition," the singer seems to be expressing a sense of detachment and resignation toward the world around them. The first verse suggests a certain indifference and even hostility toward others' opinions or desires, with the assertive statement that "we're not concerned with you" and the implication that others' ambitions or goals are of little consequence. Instead, the singer seems to focus on the present moment, perhaps suggesting a desire to live in the moment rather than striving for something in particular.

The second verse presents a more personal and introspective view, with the singer describing themselves as a "dried-up seed" that can't be restored. There is a sense of weariness and self-doubt in the line "I hope no-one notices the sleep on me," suggesting a fear of being perceived as lazy or unproductive. However, the verse also seems to suggest a sense of aimlessness or lack of direction, with the singer "looking for nothing particularly" as they walk down a "shallow slope." The final lines of the verses, "Am I guided or is this life for free / Because nothing ever seems to happen to me," further underline this sense of confusion or uncertainty about the nature of life itself.

Overall, "Ambition" seems to be a song that grapples with questions of purpose and meaning, but ultimately offers few concrete answers or resolutions. The lyrics present a clear sense of detachment and distance from the external world, but also a sense of confusion and frustration with one's own position within it.

store contempt for the lesson,
see no true reflection,

I'll guarantee a wooden spoon,
ambivalence calls your every tune."

That chorus (confirmed with Vic) is as follows:
"You consider no question,
store contempt for the lesson,
see no true reflection,
with no intention to receive a visit soon,
although you need a visit soon,
I'll guarantee a wooden spoon,
ambivalence calls your every tune."

My all-time favourite single! Seems to my ears to share some sonic and structural similarities with another great single, 'Virginia Plain' by Roxy Music. But it's even better, obviously.
