Cry
Godley Creme Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You don't know how to ease my pain
You don't know
You don't know how to ease my pain
You don't know what the sound is darlin'
It's the sound of my tears fallin'
Or is it the rain?
You don't know how to play the game
You cheat
You lie
You make me want to cry
You make me want to cry
Cry
You make me want to cry

You don't know how to ease my pain
You don't know
You don't know how to ease my pain
Don't you hear any voices cryin'?
That's the sound of my love dyin'
Here comes the rain
You don't know how to play the game
You cheat
You lie
You don't even know how to say goodbye
You make me want to cry
You don't know
You don't even know how to say goodbye
You make me want to cry
You don't even know how to say goodbye
You make me want to cry
Cry

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Godley & Creme's song "Cry" explore the overwhelming pain of a relationship that has gone sour. The singer is speaking to their lover, accusing them of not knowing how to ease the singer's pain. They describe the sound of their own tears falling or the sound of rain, which blurs the line between real and emotional weather. The lover is accused of cheating and lying, making the singer want to cry. The repeated phrase "You don't know how to play the game" drives home the idea that the listener is clueless about how to make things work in the relationship. The song ends with the singer remarking that the sound of their love dying is like the sound of voices crying, and that the lover doesn't even know how to say goodbye, adding to the feeling of hopelessness and despair.

1985: still amazing after all these years. The video was far ahead of its time, and Godley and Creme, with Trevor Horn producing, made a record that still stands the test of time.

I was more partial to Max Headroom but this song a tear jerker!

I remember driving on a gray, rainy summer day and this song came on, almost perfectly to the rhythm of the windshield wipers. I've never forgotten that.

@quota77

what kind of car?

@seanpratchler1888 --That's a great story, and I can relate because something similar happened to me. I was once stopped at a railroad crossing, with Tom Petty's American Girl playing on the radio. The crossing's lights and bell were were exactly in sync with the song's refrain. And I mean exactly. I couldn't but laugh out loud, and because I was alone in the car, it must have made a weird site to the other drivers alongside. I didn't care, it was a great moment.

What a unique and mesmerizing song. Absolutely amazing. I was 12 when this came out (first heard it on Miami Vice), I’m almost 50 now. Time flies.
