Tribal Connection
Gogol Bordello Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where there's a music should be comin' out of every car
There is a silence all over downtown
Where community celebrations shall be aroused
I walk the sterile gardens, life is on pause, here it is

No can do this, no can do that
What the hell can you do, my friend?
In this place that you call your town

No can do this, no can do that
What the hell can you do, my friend?
In this place that you call your town

I guess you can't expect much from the hometown
Well I don't know if you can even call it your own
When they don't want you to get near excitement
And in protest of that you just stay home, here it is now

No can do this, no can do that
What the hell can you do, my friend?
In this place that you call your town

No can do this, no can do that
What the hell can you do, my friend?
In this place that you call your town

Party, party, party, party, party, party
Party, party, party, party, party, party
Party, party, party, party, party, party
Party, party, party, party, party, party
Party, party, party, party, after party

On intersection of all dimensions
Where I was stoppin' by just for a drink
I meet a brother from tribal connection
And together we began to sing

We gonna turn frustration into inspiration
Whatever demons are there, we gonna set them free
Such is the method of tribal connection
Of our fun loving restless breed

I wanna walk this Earth like it is mine
And so is everyone in our fun lovin' tribe
C'mon man, is that real so much to ask?
From all these goddamn Nazi-fuedals

But I'm gonna take it to community
'Cause I want everyone to see
There never was any conspiracy
And we are all here simply to sing

No can do this, no can do that
What the hell can you do, my friend?
In this place that you call your town

No can do this, no can do that
What the hell can you do, my friend?
In this place that you call your town

Where there's a music should be comin' out of every car
There is a silence all over downtown

Only the intersection semi-alive
Outskirts are sedated, me gone

Overall Meaning

Gogol Bordello's "Tribal Connection" expresses frustration at the lack of community celebrations and music in the downtown area. Instead of lively streets and music, the singer encounters a sterile and lifeless environment. The lyrics convey a sense of boredom and hopelessness in the hometown, where there seems to be nothing to do but stay at home. The singer questions the ownership of the town and the right to enjoy excitement, and confronts the notion that there is little to be done but accept the status quo.

However, amidst the frustration and monotony, the singer finds hope in the Tribal Connection. He meets someone from the connection and together they begin to sing, turning frustration into inspiration. The Tribal Connection is presented as a method to set free demons and to walk the earth with a fun-loving, restless breed. The song ultimately argues for community and for a group of people who are there simply to sing, to celebrate and to connect.

I'm an old lady, heard this for the first time. Incredible subtle zings from accordion and violin (Small is more, when it comes to accordion). What stunning lyrics!!! The unpretentious energy reminds me of Men At Work, but Hutz' lyrics are better. I'm going to be doodle singing/whistling this all summer in my trailer park, driving my neighbors nuts--except, maybe they'll catch on, and start singing/chanting, too!

Cómo no amar a Gogol Bordello si me acompañaron durante mi viaje por el sur de México hace ya diez años.

I've seen them in concert twice. The first time was in Orlando at a large festival. I was so obsessed with them that I flew from Kentucky to Florida just to see this band. A year or two later I saw them on a headlining tour at a smaller venue in Atlanta. It was EPIC! I was close enough to the stage that I got splattered with Eugene's sweat!
