Daddy Buy Me a Girl
Golden Earring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When only a little baby
I already was rich
Wealthy mother and father
Gave me all I could wish

Precious toys things I just wanted
Crowding the park and the stabely house
Girls were thinking they loved me
Affection still was for sale

The only time I adored one
Thinking love was real fun
Soon it started to show
That girl just wanted my dough

Gave her rings, diamonds and minkcoats
Hoping these would make her see that
I'm much more than only money
Affection wasn't for sale

Daddy buy me a girl
Please, buy me a girl
You can spend all of your money
To make sure she calls me honey
Rich or poor, all the same crazy about me

The only time I adored one
Thinking love was real fun
Soon it started to show
That girl just wanted my dough

Gave her rings, diamonds and minkcoats
Hoping these would make her see that
I'm much more than only money
Affection wasn't for sale

Daddy buy me a girl
Please, buy me a girl
You can spend all of your money
To make sure when she calls me honey
Rich or poor, all the same crazy about me

Crazy about me

Overall Meaning

The song "Daddy Buy Me a Girl" by Golden Earring tells the story of a wealthy person who has been spoiled with material possessions since birth. He has all the toys he could want, and girls are attracted to him solely because of his wealth. The singer of the song has given diamonds and mink coats to a woman he believed he loved, but soon realizes she only wanted his money. He then asks his father to buy him a girl in the hopes that he will find someone who genuinely cares for him.

The song is a commentary on the superficiality of relationships based on wealth, and the singer's realization that material possessions cannot buy genuine affection. The lyrics also highlight the ease at which some individuals with wealth can acquire objects and even people. The repeated line "affection still was for sale" emphasizes this theme.

Interestingly, despite the lyrics' message, the song itself was actually commissioned by a Dutch music label as a way to promote itself. The song was written by the lead singer of Golden Earring, Barry Hay, and the drummer, Cesar Zuiderwijk, in a single day. The song became a hit in the Netherlands but was not as successful internationally.

I love this song, especially the harmony singing in the chorus. Sounds a lot like vintage Hollies by the way.

They sound a lot like Herman's Hermits

I love The Hollies. Now I finally know why :) They sound like they're coming from my home town Den Haag.

Golden Earing ... Oddly enough, would be a Much Bigger Recognized Band if they never played Radar Love or Twilight Zone... those two songs are Awesome.. But.. they seem to Over Shadow their Endless Highway of HITS... LOL /CRY.. ROCK \m/

As a kid I holidayed in Den Haag, where I'd walk the streets looking for records stores and the latest Golden Earring singles. This was one. So were 'Sound of the Screaming Day', 'In My House' and others, all of which were great pop. When Barry Hay joined as vocalist (after this tune) the lyrics got even more interesting...often much better (as the likes of 'Radar Love' suggest) than those of many (most!) English-speaking bands. It's great that this band - formed in '62 - is still going strong.

Dong dong diki diki dong was their answer to Obladi, oblada by the Beatles.

Barry Hay is of English/Burmese descent so with him in the fold, it meant that they could finally write songs with lyrics that would actually make sense. Barry would go over lyric sheets and go "Wrong, it should go like this..."

But one of their early hits with Barry was "Dong-dong-diki-diki-dong" so it took them a while to get accustomed to each other.

Great song and video. Thanks for the upload.
