Song of a Devil's Servant
Golden Earring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Call my name and I'll be there
To serve your majesty everywhere
No instruction is too much for me
Execute his order, like in a bad dream
Ah, ah, ah,.........
No use to run and hide
For his eyes are open wide
and when he finds you
These eyes will burn into your soul
I sold my life, without thinkin' twice
But instead of fortune he gave me lies
I'm facing hell to eternity

The only way out is suicide for me
Ah, ah, ah,....................

Overall Meaning

In "Song of a Devil's Servant," Golden Earring delivers a grim warning about the dangers of blindly submitting oneself to an unscrupulous authority. The lyrics describe a man who has fallen under the spell of a malevolent figure, presumably the devil himself. He is completely devoted to his master, willing to carry out any order without question, even though he is fully aware that his devotion will ultimately lead him to an eternity in hell. The singer's warning is clear: don't let yourself be enslaved to a false master, or you may never escape.

The chilling words of "Song of a Devil's Servant" are a powerful reminder of the destructive power of authoritarianism, as well as the dangers of blindly surrendering one's autonomy. The lyrics play on deeply archetypal imagery, evoking the nightmare of being caught in the grip of an unstoppable force that ultimately leads to one's doom. The repeated use of "Ah, ah, ah..." only adds to the sense of terror and suspense, like the hiss of a serpent ready to strike. The final line, "The only way out is suicide for me," is a haunting conclusion to the song, highlighting the tragic nature of the singer's situation.

And there lies the problem, people who only know the band for just those two songs, never seem open to explore whatever else they did and in doing so miss out on so much good music. So here's a list of songs of theirs you should check out.
- Daddy buy me a girl. (Shows them at their most Beatles-Like)
- The sound of the screaming day (Again, VERY sixties)
- Back Home (The Band finding its sound)
- Buddy Joe
- She flies on strange wings
- Kill me Ce Soir
- Long Blond animal
- Quiet eyes

Man this is so wunderbar. Yet a third version of this song, different than the other two recorded versions. Rinus on keys, so no bass. A True gem. Do not let this one disappear ☝️

What a long lost treasure!!! Simply AWESOME!!! Makes me wonder how much more of this Golden Earring Beat Club material is still in the vaults!

crossroader71

One of the best heavy rock/prog bands between 1969-1973!

This is my favourite Golden Earring song. I never thought I'd find live footage of it on YT. It deviates a bit from the studio recording, but the last 4 and a bit minutes are true to the record. The song was too long to be released as a single, otherwise it may have been their first worldwide hit. Rinus Gerritsen is one of my favourite bass players, but here he demonstrates that he is competent on keyboards as well.

Ivan May

I like the flute playing from Barry Hay, it is extremely ambient sounding.
