Goldenhorse's debut album Riverhead was released in October 2002. Over the following 18 months, various singles from the album started to be played on the radio and the band played live throughout New Zealand. Sales of the record climbed slowly then steadily and in August 2004 the album reached no.1 on the NZ national charts.
"Out of the Moon" was released in 2005. "Reporter" was released in 2007.
The band has not said it has split; the time-out is described as a hiatus with Morrell releasing a solo album in 2010 and King debuting Grand Rapids in 2011.

Northern Lights
Goldenhorse Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Are just like fuel underground
You stop my feet
From floating up when I come down
I go up
And watch the world spinning round
But I came down
You can't see
That I'm like dust on the ground
The wind picks up
And then it blows me around
I go up
And watch the world spinning round
But I came down
Finding out the northern lights
Flicked up a single switch called rocket
Finding out the northern lights
Flicked up a single switch called rocket
Finding out the northern lights
The northern lights
Stones like these
Are just like fuel underground
You stop my feet
From floating up when I come down
I go up
And watch the world spinning round
But I came down
Finding out the northern lights
Flicked up a single switch called rocket
Finding out the northern lights
Flicked up a single switch called rocket
Finding out the northern lights
The northern lights
The northern lights
The northern lights
The northern lights
The northern lights
The northern lights
The northern lights
The northern lights
The lyrics of Goldenhorse's song Northern Lights describe the feeling of being grounded by something, in this case, a metaphorical "stone" that keeps the singer's feet from "floating up when I come down." The stone is compared to fuel underground, suggesting that it provides something essential for the singer's stability. The rest of the lyrics evoke a sense of being blown around like dust, suggesting a lack of control or agency. However, there is also a sense of fascination with the world around them, as the singer goes "up and watch[es] the world spinning round." The repeated refrain of "finding out the northern lights" suggest that these lights represent some kind of revelation or inspiration.
The lyrics to Northern Lights are enigmatic and ambiguous, allowing for multiple interpretations. One possible reading is that the stone represents a grounding force that keeps the singer from being overwhelmed by the chaos and uncertainty of the world, but at the same time, it also restricts their movement and freedom. The northern lights, which are often associated with spiritual or mystical experiences, represent a glimpse of something beyond the mundane world, something that flickers on and off like a switch or a rocket. The song seems to be exploring the tension between stability and change, between being grounded and being free to explore new horizons.
