99 Red Balloons
Goldfinger Lyrics

You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money weÂ've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
Till one by one they were gone
Back at base, sparks in the software
Flash the message â??somethings out thereâ??
Floating in the summer sky
Ninety nine red balloons go by

Ninety nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, its red alert
ThereÂ's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
And focusing it on the sky
The ninety nine red balloons go by

Ninety nine decisions treat
Ninety nine ministers meet
To worry, worry, super scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The President is on the line
As ninety nine red balloons go by

Ninety nine knights of the air
Ride super high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a super hero
Everyone's a Captain Kirk
With orders to identify
To clarify and classify
Scrambling the summer sky
Ninety nine red balloons go by

As ninety nine red balloons go by

Ninety nine dreams I have had
In every one a red balloon
It's all over and I'm standing pretty
In this dust that was a city
If could find a souvenir
Just the prove the world was here
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go

German part translated:
Ninety-nine ministers of war
Matchstick and jerrycans
They thought they were smart people
smelled a big hunt
Shouts: War and wanted power
Man, who would have thought?
That it will come to this one day
Because of ninety-nine balloons
Ninety nine balloons

Kezanza the Great

Another translation:

Ninety-nine war ministers
Match and jerrycan (literally gas can)
Took themselves to be clever people
Already smelled the fat loot
Called "War" and wanted power
Man, who would've thought
That it would someday come so far
Because of ninety-nine balloons

Original German:
Neunundneunzig Kriegsminister
Streichholz und Benzinkanister
Hielten sich für schlaue Leute
Witterten schon fette Beute
Riefen "Krieg" und wollten Macht
Mann, wer hätte das gedacht
Dass es einmal soweit kommt
Wegen neunundneunzig Luftballons

The Faithful Student

The German translation (from 99 Luftballons) to English (rather than the original corresponding verse in the 99 Red Balloons version) is:
99 war ministers
matches and gasoline canisters
They thought they were clever people
already smelled a nice bounty
Called for war and wanted power.
Man, who would've thought
that things would someday go so far
because of 99 balloons.

(As an aside, the ruminations about the motivations of the leadership are clearly the result of the Thirty Years War and both World Wars.  The German people have long bitter experience being the victims of such machinations.

Yes, things went poorly for everyone.  Plenty of non German victims to be sure.  But think of the bitterness of being in any of the sizable factions who didn't want these wars.  Roughly 1/3 of Germans disliked or hated Hitler even at the peak of this success, and German socialists in WW I thought the Kaiser was at best a figurehead at worst an obsolete relic.

If only we in the contemporary world had such large minorities against our own self-serving warmongers!)

To me, that's definitely a harder hitting verse and totally suits going into a frenzy on the instruments (much moreso than the original verse from 99 Red Balloons)

See the problem is, the English version takes half of this verse and uses a milder version of it earlier.  So even if the German to English fit the meter and rhyme, it would sound weird inserting it.  So going with German was really the only way to have a harder hitting climax to the song.

Now that I finally have the German translation to 99 Luftballons, I vastly prefer it.

Though I'll give the writer who did the English version props for managing an okay version sort of in the same spirit.  And Goldfinger finally does a version of 99 Red Balloons that has some of the anger and tension that 99 Luftballons has.
