The fourth album Seventh Tree placed a greater emphasis on ambient and downtempo music, drawing inspiration from nature and paganism, while their fifth album, Head First, found the group exploring 1980s-influenced synthpop. Head First also earned the second Grammy Award nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2010. Oh in the sense of you
When we're alone I'm free
Until the morning comes
Who are we
I felt your coldness come
You're insatiable me I was blind
At the mirror you gently comb your hair
Humming your favorite song
You are the younger me in his arms
I felt your coldness come
My own Simone too casually
Daylight trickles in on your tremulous skin
A moonlit tear a devil designs
You're insatiable me I was blind
I gave to you the world all my world is you
A tale to tell the world it's now your's Simone
The lyrics of Goldfrapp's song "Simone" tell a story of a complex and intense relationship between two people, one of whom is referred to as Simone. The singer in the song describes how they find freedom in being with Simone, but also how they have been blinded by them and given them everything. The second verse brings in a new perspective, as the singer reflects on their own experience of feeling Simone's coldness and being too casual with them. The chorus repeated throughout the song includes the haunting line "You're insatiable me I was blind", which speaks to the power dynamics at play in this relationship.
The imagery in the song is vivid and sensual, with references to combing hair and moonlit tears. The line "You are the younger me in his arms" also adds a layer of complexity to the relationship dynamics, suggesting that there may be some sort of role reversal or power struggle happening between the two people. The last line of the song, "A tale to tell the world it's now your's Simone", suggests that there is a larger story at play here and that Simone is somehow taking control or claiming ownership of something.
Overall, "Simone" is a haunting and complex song that draws the listener in with its evocative lyrics and mysterious storytelling.
