UTOPIA
Goldfrapp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a strange day
No colors or shapes
No sound in my head
I forget who I am

When I'm with you
There's no reason
There's no sense

I'm not supposed to feel
I forget who I am
I forget

Fascist baby
Utopia, utopia

My dog needs new ears
Make his eyes see forever
Make him live like me
Again and again

Fascist baby
Utopia, utopia

I'm wired to the world
That's how I know everything
I'm super brain
That's how they made me

Fascist baby
Utopia, utopia

Overall Meaning

In Goldfrapp's song Utopia, the singer describes feeling disconnected from reality, as if there are no colors, shapes or sounds in her world. She forgets who she is but finds solace in being with someone else, regardless of the lack of reason or sense. The idea of forgetting who one is suggests a form of escapism or detachment from society, perhaps because the singer of the song cannot reconcile with the harsh reality of the world.

The lyrics take a more sinister turn when the singer mentions fascist baby and utopia. The juxtaposition of fascism and utopia is an interesting one, as utopia suggests perfection, freedom, and equality, while fascism represents a brutish form of power and control over others. It's as if the singer is grappling with the idea of utopia, whether it can coexist with fascism and whether utopia can exist at all.

The imagery of the dog needing new ears is also intriguing, as it suggests that the singer wants to change the way the world is perceived by the dog, to make it see forever, as if the present moment is not good enough. This longing for something beyond the present moment ties into the idea of utopia, where everything is perfect and never-ending. The line "I'm wired to the world/ That's how I know everything" suggests that the singer is hyper-connected to the world around her, both its beauty and its ugliness.

@thumper8684

@@slartybartfast4213 I remember this as

I forget who I am,
again and again,
fascist baby.

Which captures an aspect of fascism, that it rewrites history and misapropriates culture.

I listened again and I heard precious. Maybe the confusion is deliberate, but I would rather this was just a dreamlike indulgence.

@alarmcaller

This chorus of this song has one of the most utterly intoxicating synth rhythms I have ever heard. Absolutely magnificent.

@THEYOGAFACE

I agree . The texture of the synth is everything

Is an inspiration and gives hope to those who have not made it young....she was 35 when this came out ..her debut....she's been wildly successful since....its a myth that you have to make it by 25 or you'll never make it/be left out in the cold forever......

@92RedRevolver

I'm glad she got over that too, she famously wouldn't talk about her age for a long time, possibly shame. She shouldn't be ashamed, her life has shaped this beautiful woman and her relationship with her own raw talent. I'm not saying she should be actively grateful for the shit, but yeah, don't be embarassed because you're x age and not got a record deal. What about those Fisherman Friends guys, even? They were in their sixties and seventies when they did their debut album!

@Rick-Jangle

Shouldn’t make any difference if your 25, 35, or 85! If it’s a good song, it’s a good song! There have been brilliant song writers and musicians out there,that have written great material and will never be heard of!

@curiositypiqued6573

@@Rick-Jangle exactly the BS cxxxs in music world and TBH not just the industry but society/the world at large is full of ageist scumbags....just "meh" about it ya know???😡😠
