Gomez completed an inaugural U.S. tour opening for Eagle-Eye Cherry in October 1998, while the press still offered praise (Spin magazine called Bring It On "a damn beautiful album," giving it an eight out of ten rating). Liquid Skin followed one year later and went platinum in England, and the rarities/B-sides compilation Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline appeared in 2000. A third studio album, In Our Gun, was released in spring 2002. Another hiatus saw Ian Ball relocating to Los Angeles while still working with the band at its new studio in Portslade, England. The dozens of tracks recorded during this time were whittled down and fashioned into Split the Difference, released in May of 2004. By that time, Hut, the group's original label, had gone under, leaving Gomez signed to Virgin (Hut's distributor). Despite all the critical acclaim, the band's album sales never seemed to match Virgin's expectations, and the two sides parted ways later that year.
In 2005, Gomez signed with ATO Records and released Out West, the group's first live album. How We Operate arrived in May 2006, and the band rounded out the year by assembling a retrospective collection of singles, rarities, and unreleased tracks entitled Five Men in a Hut: Singles 1998-2004. Gomez's members were spread across two continents by this point, leading to a three-year gap between How We Operate and the band's sixth studio release, A New Tide, parts of which were recorded individually by the various bandmates and then merged online. Ben Ottewell took some time after its release to launch a solo career, with 2011's Shapes & Shadows marking his first major release outside of the band. Months later, the band released another studio album, Whatever's on Your Mind, with Phantom Planet's Sam Farrar sharing production duties with the bandmates themselves.

Worst in all the world
A mystery lies in her
She spends her days
In a violent rage
Try as I might
I love her
Everytime the tears run dry
The story goes
What's left behind
Shivers like a leaf
Taciturn and gentle
It's not hard to believe
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with my mind
Don't ask me why,
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with your mind
She likes to fight
The whole world bang to rights
Yours truly, I'd die for her
The growing pains
Dissolve in lemonade
The sweetness flies to her
Every time her temper flares
A storm will blow
What's left's so rare
A fragment of the girl
Soft and sentimental
The side she tries not to share
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with my head
Don't ask me why,
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with your mind
Don't ask me why,
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with my mind
When your song is sung
Don't let me colour your opinion
That girl's my life, I tell ya
Every time my tears run dry
And the moment's flown
And re-designed
My feelings for the girl
How could I be with out her?
I would surely still find
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with my mind
Don't ask me why,
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with my mind
Don't ask me why,
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with your mind
Don't ask me why,
The Girlshapedlovedrug
Messes with my mind
The song "Girlshapedlovedrug" by Gomez is a love song that depicts the intense and addictive nature of love, using powerful imagery and metaphors. The lyrics suggest that the girl in question is a complex and somewhat mysterious character, who is capable of both extreme anger and sudden sweetness. Despite her flaws, however, the singer is clearly infatuated with her, even referring to her as "my life". The chorus, which repeats the phrase "the girl-shaped love drug messes with my mind" suggests that this love is like a drug, that the singer is addicted to, even though it causes him pain and confusion.
The opening lines of the song ("She's a wicked girl, worst in all the world, a mystery lies in her") set the tone for the rest of the song. The girl is portrayed as enigmatic and powerful, but also dangerous and potentially damaging. The lines "every time her temper flares, a storm will blow, what's left's so rare, a fragment of the girl, soft and sentimental, the side she tries not to share" suggest that behind her tough exterior is a vulnerable and emotional person, who the singer is deeply drawn to. The chorus, which repeats the phrase "the girl-shaped love drug messes with my mind" suggests that this love is like a drug, that the singer is addicted to, even though it causes him pain and confusion.
