Black Balloon
Goo Goo Dolls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby's black balloon makes her fly
I almost fell into that hole in your life
And you're not thinking about tomorrow
'Cause you were the same as me
But on your knees

A thousand other boys could never reach you
How could I have been the one
I saw the world spin beneath you
And scatter like ice from the spoon
That was your womb

Comin' down the world turned over
And angels fall without you there
And I go on as you get colder
Or are you someone's prayer

You know the lies that they always told you
And the love you never knew
What's the things they never showed you
That swallowed the light from the sun
Inside your room

Comin' down the world turned over
And angels fall without you there
And I go on as you get colder
Or are you someone's prayer

And there's no time left for losin'
When you stand they fall
Comin' down the world turned over
And angels fall without you there
And I go on as you grow colder
All because I'm
Comin' down the years turn over
And angels fall without you there
And I'll go on to bring you home
All because I'm
All because I'm

And I'll become
What you became to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Goo Goo Dolls's song Black Balloon tell a story about a person's struggles with addiction and the impact it has on the people in their life. The metaphor of the black balloon represents the addiction that makes the person feel like they are flying, but they are actually falling into a hole in their life. The singer almost fell into that same hole as well, but they were able to avoid it. The addicted person is not thinking about the future and is on their knees, indicating their surrender to the addiction.

The singer acknowledges that many other boys couldn't reach the addicted person, yet they are unsure of how they became the one who fell for them. They saw the world spin beneath the addicted person and scatter like ice, a metaphor for how the addiction has impacted their life. The addicted person's room is no longer a place where sunlight can enter, but rather a place where the light has been swallowed up by the addiction.

The chorus repeats the theme of angels falling without the addicted person, indicating the destructive impact the addiction has on their life. The singer goes on as the addicted person grows colder, and there's no more time for losing. Eventually, the singer becomes what the addicted person meant to them and hopes to bring them home.

I remember this song playing in my car as I drove 1500 miles to college. It was 4am and I was the only one on the highway. It was such a beautiful moment.

My brother struggled for 8 years with a heroin addiction. He will be 5 years sober in July. This song used to make me cry with sadness. It still brings tears to my eyes but they are now tears of relief, joy, and pride for my brother overcoming his demons. For anyone out there struggling, recovery is not impossible and it does get better 💙
