Slide
Goo Goo Dolls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Could you whisper in my ear?
The things you wanna feel
I'll give you anything
To feel it coming

Do you wake up on your own
And wonder where you are?
You live with all your faults

I wanna wake up where you are
I won't say anything at all
So why don't you slide?
Yeah, I'm gonna let it slide

Don't you love the life you killed?
The priest is on the phone
Your father hit the wall
Your ma disowned you
Don't supposed I'll ever know
What it means to be a man
It's something I can't change
I'll live around it

I wanna wake up where you are
I won't say anything at all
So why don't you slide
Ooh, slide

And I'll do anything you ever dreamed to be complete
Little pieces of the nothing that fall
Oh, May
Put your arms around me
What you feel is what you are
And what you are is beautiful
Oh, May
Do you wanna get married or run away?

And I'll do anything you ever dreamed to be complete
Little pieces of the nothing that fall
Oh, May
Put your arms around me
What you feel is what you are
And what you are is beautiful
Oh, May
Do you wanna get married or run away?

I wanna wake up where you are
I won't say anything

(Yeah, slide)
And I'll do anything you ever dreamed to be complete (yeah, slide)
Little pieces of the nothing that fall (yeah, slide)
And I'll do anything you ever dreamed to be complete (yeah, slide)
Little pieces of the nothing that fall (oh, oh slide)
Yeah, slide between the sheets of all them beds you never knew (yeah, slide)
Why don't you slide into my room
Just slide into my room
Oh, we'll run away, run away, run away

Overall Meaning

The Goo Goo Dolls' "Slide" tells the story of a person who is infatuated with another person and is willing to do anything to make them happy. The song's opening lines, "Could you whisper in my ear?/The things you wanna feel/I'll give you anything/To feel it coming" suggest the singer's willingness to fulfill the desires of the person they are singing to. This suggests not only a romantic interest but also a sense of desperation.

The chorus of the song, "I wanna wake up where you are/I won't say anything at all/So why don't you slide?" further emphasizes the singer's desire to be close to the other person, regardless of the consequences. The line "Don't you love the life you killed?" suggests regret for past actions, which may have contributed to why the singer feels so desperate for connection.

The lines "What you feel is what you are/And what you are is beautiful," suggests an acceptance of the other person's flaws and insecurities, and a message of self-love. The final lines, "Do you wanna get married or run away?" indicate uncertainty and fear of making commitments and taking big leaps.

Overall, "Slide" is a passionate and intense song about the need for human connection and the feeling of being incomplete without it.

If I could stay stuck in a decade, I would forever live in the 90s. I’m so nostalgic it hurts and this song just transforms me back to those simpler times!. What a great time to be alive.

@cherieavery7797

Yep there was just enough technology and the Television music was awesome

@kat.5927

I feel the exact same way you know, when you listen to a 90s song and feel all the feels down to your bones, and relive moments from that decade and just wish you could live them over and over again forever...

@coltonstrain584

I know being a 90s kid ppl just don't understand how good it really was

@TexasGreed

Yeah I know that feeling. certain bands and songs really get me. Smashing Pumpkins in particular.

@Mr360cuda

I married my high school sweetheart in the early 80’s ! She was pregnant with our first child. My future in-laws didn’t think we would make it. Just like everyone else. 38 years later , I’m still with my sweetheart and wouldn’t change anything. 2 children and 4 grandchildren later. Life is awesome!!!

@whitewalker608

This is dreams.

@dean9203

Congratulations, my sweetheart and I were marred in 1984 and she too was pregnant and we’re still married with kids that gave us grandkids . Life is good because God is good.

@lilafeldman8630

Gee, that was back in the day when the world still believed in marriage. Wish they still did.
