The Love
Good Charlotte Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I fucking hate these nights
The ones where you don't know me
If I could get this right
If I could get away from the old me

But I'll survive, right now I'm dyin' just to breathe in
Just to be alive
Just to get away from the old me

There's only makeshift love tonight
There's a triage in my living room
She checks my vital signs
Then opens up my wounds

Like I'm dying tonight
And the whole world is laughing
Like everyone I love has gone away (woah)
I'm dying tonight
But no one is crying
It's not alright no matter what they say (woah)

I fuckin' hate these fights
The ones where you just own me
We used to be so tight (yeah right)
But you just want the old me
Turn off the god damn lights
If you're really gonna get up and just leave
I used to get so high
But that was just the fucking old me

There's only makeshift love tonight
There's a triage in my living room
She'll check my vital signs
To see what else she can do

Like I'm dying tonight
And the whole world is laughing
Like everyone I love has gone away (woah)
I'm dying tonight
But no one is crying
It's not alright no matter what they say (woah)

All that she wanted was me broken hearted
I know it's sad but it's true
I won't get her started, now she's departed
There's no looking back me and you

There's only makeshift love tonight
There's a triage in my living room
She checks my vital signs
To see what else she can do

Like I'm dying tonight
And the whole world is laughing
Like everyone I love has gone away (woah)
I'm dying tonight
But no one is crying
It's not alright, no matter what they say (woah)

All that she wanted was me broken hearted
I know it's sad but it's true

Overall Meaning

The Love is a song by American rock band Good Charlotte, released in 2002 on their album "The Young and the Hopeless." The lyrics of the song touch upon the theme of feeling lost and not knowing oneself. The first verse speaks of disliking certain nights where there's a feeling of being unknown, a desire to detach from the old self. This is something most people can relate to, as everyone has gone through a period in their lives where they felt a crucial need for change. The song talks about surviving; sometimes, living is feeling like you're dying, but despite this, the song aims to inspire the listener to fight for life.

In the chorus, makeshift love is a reference to temporary love. There's a sort of truce in the love they share, but it isn't the love they wanted. The living room becomes a triage area, where they try their best to save their relationship. The whole world laughs while they fight their battles, seeming to imply that they're the only ones fighting for something they think is worth fighting for. But, even in chaos, the song reminds us that no one is crying. Therefore, they mean that no one reaches out to try and help them or sympathize with them. Thus, the feeling of isolation sets in.

@Annicortes

She's going out to forget they were together
All that time he was taking her for granted
She wants to see if there's more
Than he gave she's looking for

He calls her up
He's trippin' on the phone now
He doesn't want her out there
And alone now

He knows she's movin' it
Knows she's using it
Now he's losing it, she don't care

Everybody put up your hands
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Feel the beat now
If you've got nothing left
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Back it up now
You've got a reason to live
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Feelin' good now
Don't be afraid to get down
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

He was always giving her attention
Looking hard to find the things she mentioned
He was dedicated but most suckers hate it
That girl was fine but she didn't appreciate him

She calls him up
She's trippin' on the phone now
He had to get up
And he ain't comin' home now

He's tryin' to forget her
That's how we come with him
When he first met her
When they first got together

Everybody put up your hands
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Feel the beat now
If you got nothing left
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Back it up now
You got a reason to live
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Feelin' good now
Don't be afraid to get down
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

To the beat, to the beat, to the beat
You got nothing to lose
Don't be afraid to get down

We break up, it's something that we do now
Everyone has got to do it sometime
It's okay, let it go
Get out there and find someone

It's too late to be trippin' on the phone here
Get off the wire, know everything is good here
Stop what you're doin', you don't wanna ruin
The chance that you got to find a new one

Everybody put up your hands
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Feel the beat now
If you got nothing left
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Back it up now
You got a reason to live
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

Feelin' good now
Don't be afraid to get down
Say I don't wanna be in love
I don't wanna be in love

No, no
Now you know what to do
So come on, get up, girl
