Formed by four "Vegan Straightedge dudes" in 1997 because "the hardcore scene was in dire need of a sense of humor", this band uses self-irony when spreading their message of veganism, straight edge, and positivity. Their main influence is New York straight edge group Gorilla Biscuits, "We tried to sound as much like Gorilla Biscuits as possible." Other influences include 7 Seconds, Minor Threat, and Youth of Today.
The band recorded three records before parting way in 2002, saying "their mission had been accomplished and they reached for new goals." At the same time they released a compilation album from their entire career, Positively Positive 1997-2002, on Equal Vision. The band did a reunion tour in 2004 and released a brand new record in January 2006 entitled Between Christian Rock And A Hard Place, again on Equal Vision. In Europe their material is released by Reflections Records, and their new album will be accompanied by tours of Europe and the US.
They also released a limited edition split seven inch with Dead After School (UK hardcore, cat n cakey records) - a band that they met on tour in Iceland. they went on to tour together on their last UK tour.
Next Year In Jerusalem
Good Clean Fun Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With socks against authority would you be out there all alone,
The world is such a crazy place and I've always found it odd,
That if you want to hate the most you've got to really love your god,
Looks like me made a big mistake back in 1948,
Two wrongs do not make things ok,
War in the holy land, the blood is on your hands,
And your god cannot wash it away,
US dollars pay the bill but they cannot pay the price,
Here's what's left of Zionism, bullets fill the desert air,
Until we make a world with no religion, peace doesn't have a prayer.
The song "Next Year in Jerusalem" by Good Clean Fun is a powerful commentary on the conflict and violence that plagues the Holy Land. The lyrics begin by asking a rhetorical question about the level of anger that would lead someone to face a rifle with only a stone. This is a clear reference to the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine, where Palestinians have been known to throw stones or other objects at Israeli soldiers during clashes.
The second verse examines the idea that hatred often stems from religion. The singer notes that in order to hate something or someone, you must first love your god. This line highlights the role that religion can play in fueling violence and conflict, particularly in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where both sides have deep religious ties to the land.
The chorus of the song takes aim at both sides of the conflict, arguing that the bloodshed and sacrifice is shared by all. The line "US dollars pay the bill but they cannot pay the price" refers to the fact that the United States provides significant financial and military support to Israel, but is not directly affected by the violence and suffering that it causes. The final verse calls for an end to religion altogether, arguing that until we can create a world without it, peace will remain out of reach.
