Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Party people in the place to be
You are now in the midst of a real MC
Throw your hands in the air if you real as me

Are you ready to go?
I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready
Such an easy morning, we on a ride
And I’m feeling smooth as the way the Benz drive
Turn the radio down if they playing that bullshit
They don’t want black people to think and drive

He think he live, he think he cold
He think I’m high, I’m in thinker mode
Eyes lowed, I let the sky hold the thoughts
The streets are like the high road that I go across

I mean, my whole team about to smash the streets
The Phillip Lim remind them that it’s Fashion Week
And the weather wasn’t barely hot
Did I mention that the sweater was a Jeremy Scott?
Did I mention G.O.O.D. Music, yeah, forever we hot
Motherfucker, are you ready or not?

Are you ready to go?
I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready

Are you ready to go?
I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready

This goes out to the hardcore hip-hop
(Can’t stop, you can’t stop)
This goes out to the all core hip-hop
(Can’t stop, you can’t stop)

As Ye flips the piano
The mood swings like the change of a channel
He’s heating up like they wrapped him in flannel
Selling kilos through your iPod Nano
Cocaine vandal, I induct scandal
Money drive you crazy, look at Marbury’s handle
Vaseline face, reminiscent of my tires
Ice cream paint job, something like Breyer's
Euro tank top, Dior-inspired
Sell it to you hard, no assembly required
Yeah, I’m 2012 in 2010
Which makes this a time machine, not just any Benz
Floss for the members of the gang with the 20 in
While haters wish death upon me, that’s many men
Yeah, and if he slam you on your paper route
Stop talking, motherfucker, pull your paper out

Are you ready to go?
I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready

Are you ready to go?
I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready

Now tell me, do it feel good? Well, all right
Don’t worry, we gon' be here all night
And you know a nigga rep that Westside (Westside)
Westside, Westside
So tell me who the freshest of them all?
They claiming that they fresh, they ain’t fresher than my balls
A nigga suited fresh like I'm headed to the ball
MC hunting season, putting heads up on the wall
I sneak peeked ahead while we headed to the loft
Man, I always thought with the head inside my drawers
I guess that’s why in school, my grades went from A's to B's to C's
All over double D's, I be absent all week
This is for my niggas, all the ones I ride for
Man, that’s the fam, we let ‘em in through the side door
Hold on: That’s the girl you gave a wedding ring?
Man, me and my niggas nutted on her everything

And let me hear you say ahh

Now put your hands up to the sky
Until the day in that we die
And we’ll be here all evening
G.O.O.D. Fridays, I hope you have a nice weekend

Are you ready to go?
I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready

Are you ready to go?
I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready

Are you ready to go?
I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready

Are you ready to go?

I know the city getting ready for me
I know the city getting ready

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Good Friday" describe a party atmosphere with the city getting ready for a good time. It is hinted that the main artists are on their way to grace the stage as they can feel the city getting ready for them. The first verse focuses on the easy morning with a smooth drive, but the radio is turned down as the artists don't want any distractions while thinking and driving. The second verse references the G.O.O.D Music team and the fashion week with the mention of Phillip Lim and Jeremy Scott. The third verse is a rap battle between artists pushing their limits, talking about money and drugs, and boasts their success. The last verse is a freestyle rap battle that talks profanity and disrespectfully about women.

The song is a collaborative effort between Kanye West and several other rappers, including Common, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, and Charlie Wilson. It was released on September 10, 2010, as part of the G.O.O.D. Fridays series. It was meant to promote Kanye West's studio album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," which was released in November of the same year. The G.O.O.D. Fridays series was a weekly music release event held by Kanye West, where he would release a new song or remix each Friday night.

Common uses samples from his previous work, including the instrumental of "The Corner" and lines from his album trilogy "Be", "Finding Forever" and "Universal Mind Control." Charlie Wilson's vocals were sampled from his 1992 song "Bound 2," and Kanye would later use the same sample in his 2013 single "Bound 2." The song also references other artists' work, such as 50 Cent's "Many Men."

The song was generally well-received by critics and fans, who praised the collaboration of the different artists and the message of the song. However, some criticized the lyrics for being too explicit and promoting misogyny. Despite this controversy, "Good Friday" remains a popular song among Kanye West fans.

It's such a shame GOOD Music never lived up to its true potential. No label would have ever touched them. I thought every posse cut was gonna sound like this. This track sounds like the result of having the whole crew at the studio and having everybody vibing on it.

Michael Otis

damn shame indeed!!

Steve Mack

Too bad kanye became kanye kardashian

Crypto Taco

yea but they weren't really built like a label they weren't really signing people like that it was more of a clique

chau

I honestly think they we're all too big in their own respect to all fit in one lane. I'm sure Cudi didn't wanna hmmmmm his way through an album, Big Sean already had such great potential of a solo career, Push was probably the best collaborator, and obviously Kanye is a communist in the studio. The best part about G.O.O.D. Music Group was that it was able to wrap a bow and put a title on the greatest artists from my generation
