It’s not that complicated. It’s more important that you imitate the movement and that the pattern appears to be a bait fish. A swimmin Jimmy in a rainbow pattern is a great example that imitates a wounded fish. Trout are particularly cannibalistic.

Would honestly love to see a video show your setups for your flies, wether you are using a dry dropper, or tight line nymphing, or even indicator nymphing. I think people would agree we struggle with the setup and how things should go when it comes to catching fish. That would help me learn how to rig up my flies how I should and what I should be doing compared to not doing. As always, great video, and beautiful catches! I think what really helped me turn the corner in my fly fishing was tying too, even getting the little starter fly tying kit and a few mats spending winter watching a few vids and tying up some basics really lets you start to under stand some of the etymology and what the fish are keying in on. Getting those elk hair caddis, adams, princes, bwo's, stimmies, buggers and hare ears tied up and you'll start to get a feel of what you're targeting. Plus you get that excitement of catching on on your own tie. Like you said, a good drift is what matters most and will get you on some fish.

Super helpful tips! If it is possible, please do a dedicated streamer video. You are probably one of the best east coast streamer anglers that I've seen, you and Andrew are always catching hogs! Love the content!! For me my favorite fly to use are foam beetles, especially during the spring through early fall. I fly fish alot in Illinois and Indiana for creek chubs and sunfish primarily and they cannot resist those.

I'd love to see a video on fishing with nymphs for beginners, I've heard nymphs are the way to go when you don't know what to tie on. But I personally don't know what a good setup looks like.
One of the biggest mysteries to me with nymph fishing is how to tell when you've got a fish, so it would be super helpful to have a video going over some basic technique that you use. Thank you and great video!

Great content!! Man, I’m still catching big browns on my jig streamers I tie. This week, before the waters got blown out, I caught 4-18” browns, 1-19.5” and one close to 23”’s on the 4.5” sculpin olive Marabou style jig streamer. There are definitely some tricks to putting together a jig that attracts the bigger trout. I really enjoyed this video, great content!!!

One thing I’m super curious about is what weight/length rod you use depending on what area you’re in and what size fly you’re using for that rod. I have a 5WT 8ft and I’m not sure if I should get another size rod for maybe smaller streams. Your videos are the best, my favorite fly fishing channel hands down!!

Whenever I buy dry flies the first thing I do, after crimping the barb, is dip them in Fly-Agra. It's a great pre-treat floatant. Just dip the fly in the bottle and place on a paper towel to dry overnight. I can usually get a good 20-25 drifts before I have to gink it or use powder. And after a trip any dries that were used get dipped and dried before going back in the box.

Here’s a couple of hacks to help keep your dry fly floating:
1: wear a cotton shirt. When your fly gets wet, squeeze it into the sleeve of your shirt. The absorbancy of the cotton will pull most of the moisture out of your fly. Synthetic fibers are designed to not absorb water, so they don’t work nearly as well.
2. False casts help to dry your fly. If your fly starts to sink, just see if a couple extra false casts gets most of the water out. You might notice this works best on small streams where you make shorter casts, and your fly doesn’t get enough “air-time” to dry with just one or two back-casts.
3. When you catch a fish, you often get some blood or slime on your fly. You need to wash this off as much as you can, because the slime adds weight and naturally draws in extra moisture, causing your fly to sink.
4. If you don’t have floatant, use some of the natural oils that accumulate on your face. Oil repels water, and is lighter than water also. It doesn’t work as well as a good gel floatant, but it’s free and way better than nothing, and you’ll never drop it in the water!
5. Don’t use fluorocarbon tippet for dry flies. Fluoro sinks, and can pull your fly down with it. Monofilament is more buoyant. Of course the opposite is true—fluoro is great to help get your nymphs down.

My best friend and I named the beadhead hairs ear, Whitefish candy. Those Whitefish grow strong here in Utah and they love that fly. If your trout river has a lot of Whitefish, that is a good sign. At least out here in the West. It means you have a healthy river. =)

I'm really shocked at all the videos I watch of types of flies to use and almost every single one of them omits what I consider one of the best flies ever, the mosquito!!!! If I had to choose one fly to use the rest of my life it would hands down be the mosquito. It can be used anywhere you go to "match the hatch" when it gets water logged and starts sinking it still catches fish, just an all around champ at catching fish.

Everything effects the cast. Size of fly, length of leader/tippet , flyline and rod as well. everything will be whack if one of those is off

Use a clinch not and get good at it, the best knot is the one you can tie well and fast. Multiply your tippet by 3 or 4 to match your fly (3x = 9-12 size flies, 4x=12-16 flies, etc). Footwear depends on the river and water conditions, some places I can wet wade in shorts and Chacos, some places I NEED my felt studded boots. Test it out and see what you're comfortable with.

Fly lines.... I just purchased my first nice fly line and it changed my life. I still catch about the same amount of fish, but life is just much easier.

Creeks and rivers, it depends on the average size fish you’d be targeting or catching. Can’t go wrong with a 9 foot, 5 weight like the redington crosswater. It’s what I started with and still use every week. I have a 18 foot leader on the floating line because the fish in the Provo are spooked easily, however I also have a 10.5ft 3 weight nymphing rod. I rig it with 2 nymphs like sow bugs, or wriggle worms, I use it the most. But if The fish are rising I use the 9ft 5wt and fish dries.

The nymphing rig is maxcatch, the rod is great! The reel is meh. But it came preloaded at 40 bucks and I just added a 30 foot rio nymphing converter to the weight forward floating line. My leader on that is fluro and 18 feet including the sighter and tippet.

9 foot 5 weight is the best all around rod, you can get trout from 2" to 30" and you can also get bass and even some carp. Once you decide where/what you want to fish for, then get a specialized rod. But a 9-5 is a great spot to start.

Unless you're Euro nymphing or swinging wet flies (which are done by feeling the strike), you should be using a strike indicator. Definitely get one and try it out!

I'm in the same boat. I've been flying fishing for years and my "touch" is garbage. I literally can feel anything unless it's a defined strike. So I've unwillingly become dependent on an indicator. I use airlocks and believe it or not I picked this up from a guide. . . .balloons. Just a tiny bit of air in it and tie it to your line. It works fantastic.

If you're wearing a fishing vest, there's usually a fabric loop on the bottom of right side hanging down and a small velcro strap on the left upper chest near shoulder. Place the butt of your fly rod in the loop on the right and put the velcro around the rod as you lay it across your left shoulder. You can then re-tie without having to go to the bank and/ or dropping your rod in the water or holding it between your legs.

BTW, if you say you caught a native trout, you probably should tell us that you are fishing in the East and not Colorado, etc. I know it should be obvious from the flora around the stream that you are in the East where brookies are native. In Colorado, the cutthroat are native. Love your videos.

Rod size, i am new, first rod was a nine foot five weight which was for me GREAT at the beginning but cumbersome in small eastern streams (Maryland/PA). Hard to cast in these overgrown streams. Six foot two and a half or three weight? Something about rod selection?

Although a video would be great i can say for a rule of thumb. Foam is home. Look for the bubbles and debris because that's where fish look at. They tend to like 2-4 feet at a current speed of ~1 foot per second. For smaller streams like where I live (I really haven't found videos helping to fish really small streams) it's better to just make a couple casts all along places that look good and if you don't get a hit move upstream a fish a different section. Breaking streams into sections and finding patterns for where the trout sit will help.

Great videos!! I went into a fly shop the other day and they recommended that i match my tippet lb to my leader i don’t understand why there is a tippet then if you can just get a longer leader? Thank you!

When you buy a leader it comes with about 2 feet of tippet already attached, you don't need to tie any tippet on to that leader!! After you have broke off that 2 feet of tippet, you would tie new tippet on, I use a surgeons knot.. The main time most anglers use tippet is to tie a second fly on to your first, which can be done a few different ways, but the most common is on to the bend of the hook of the first fly.

Tippet extends your leader and saves you a lot of money. Leaders are expensive and are usually tapered. They get thicker as you get closer to the fly line and you need to use as thin a line as possible connected to your fly. By adding tippet, you are extending the life of your leader. A roll of tippet is alot cheaper than constantly replacing your leaders. Instead of shortening your leader end each time you tie on a new fly, you sacrifice only the additional piece of less expensive tippet. You can also buy "tippet rings" to place between tippet and your leader. Once you've used all the tippet, just tie a new piece to the tippet ring and continue using the same leader.

quick tip:

Look at the LENS of the camera NOT your image in the viewfinder! We, the audience, are "IN" the camera.

Same way you don't look at a persons shoulder when you talk to them, you look them in the eye. Our "eye" is the LENS of the camera. Talk to US, not yourself.

I think crystal meth is one of my personal faves. Haven’t found it near me yet but have fished with it before and it has really produced! Trash flys are the wayyyyyy to go
