You know I have ADHD and have a theory about a possible cause along with a lot of issues all homosapien's seem to suffer from. If you look at the rate at which most lifeforms development. We are a very lifeform. Just over a hundred thousand years or so. However within that time we have gone from how most primates including the great apes of which we are part of who live in small groups where one male is stronger then another male. And they eat more plant based food. Most seem to like fruit more then say meat. They also play and rest a lot. Compare that to how currently humans live in industrialized areas especially. We live almost like ants or bees. Or we try to for ease of physical stress and to extend are life as much as possible. But we are not designed to be like that. And our brains are truly powerful but no science has truly proven that we are better then another lifeform. Sci and technically advancement are not evil it's more a fact that we as biological lifeforms can't keep up with it. I think if we all would just take time out from trying to own and control everything we can and decide as a whole group how to proceed we would not be so worried about things that this and say the end of the world. Lol end of the world after all the world and life has had happen to it. We my kill off ourselves but the world? I doubt that.

I also have legos I build with in my room but if I don’t have access to it or just don’t have any ideas of what to build I go on my iPad and play games, go on discord, or watch YouTube. I love doing things with my hands and often fiddle with whatever I can hold or hold my other hand to keep me occupied. When the weather permits I ride my bike around and I have been going to see movies recently to get out of my house. If I’m confined to my house or someone else’s with nothing else to do I just go on my iPad or my phone. I don’t just play games, I talk to people on discord.

I use my cell phone (reading in front of me I mean. Who actually talks on a phone anymore? Even if you do it usual video chat) in exactly the same positions as I do reading. And I would argue most people do use them sitting down and not standing. How often are people actually in a line up on standing on transit? Most people are sitting and browsing. I can't speak for everyone, but I don't stand for no reason if I can help it. I'm either sitting, laying down, or on the move. And walking and looking at your phone is dumb. I've seen people walk into trees and hit by cars doing that.
I agree with the person who also reference writing positions and handiwork, etc. Humans have been in hunched over positions since our humble beginnings.

My head is bent down for periods of time washing dishes/cleaning counters, tubs, mowing, rolling out dough/cutting-shaping pasta. Crafting and yes, cell phone usage. An endless list. We can drink, we can drive, most of us are employed (or that should be the case there was the Grand Financial Crisis which put a spanner in things) and we can vote. @Jackson Larson if youve watched futurama and how traffic works in that show is a good example of how flying cars would work. Also remember planes also have to follow a traffic system. So flying planes would practically be the same thing as normal traffic, but it would allow for the use of driving in the y axis and make parking like that, but other than that it's not much of a benefit besides the thrill.

As a chemical engineer, I don’t have control groups or as many variables as someone who works with humans/animals. I was trying to be as transparent as possible, as what’s required in a chemical engineering paper isn’t the same as in a human/animal study

I'm 29 years old and actually do not use my phone as much as most. I have an EOP at the base of my skull that's probably close to 1/4 inch tall. It's been there for as long as I can remember and has never caused any discomfort or problems at all. It's not noticeable by any but me unless you feel it. I wasn't aware it was anything special until I watched this episode. I can definitely tell you that I'm not feeling homicidal or demonic in any way. But I guess that's what a demon WOULD say. Lol. Because it isn't new, at all. The "study" is so badly done they might as well have said "we see more piebald pigeons in modern cities than old brick suburbs, so pigeons like the color of new gray cement over old red brick."
1:28 Archaeologists have been noticing these spurs throught human history and haven't found any connection to habitual activities. The spurs are somewhat common and normal.
2:08 paper vaguely says "some people had enlarge EOPs," they don't give their actual numbers. Why did they exclude their hardest piece of evidence?
2:24 The paper's own graph conflicts with the written findings.
3:15 Peer-reviewers have pointed out the above glaring omissions, oversights, conflicts of data, etc.
3:46 The paper's researchers only looked at X-rays, they literally didn't ask about phone use, reading habits, etc at all. They only mentioned someone else's research that "men tend to use cell phones more," + "the X-Rays we looked at showed more males than females had bone spurs (even though their very own graph said young women had more)," = suggested "maybe cell phones cause larger spurs."

This remembers me of a story I heard on Sixty Symbols. There was an article which seemed perfectly fine on the outside, it passed peer review and was published... until a few years later an amateur discovered something: by zooming in the images, something was clearly really odd since the images were actually pretty badly photoshopped! That’s a big problem, if they were better with Photoshop (or GIMP), nobody would have noticed a thing!

That's why peer review is only half the story. There have been frauds who've written legitimate-sounding papers since the advent of modern scientific procedures. The other half of the story is experimental repeatability. A good writer can fake data. They can't fake reality.
.

Peer review's purpose is to weed out the most obvious fakes. It is not sufficient to claim that the science is good. The only thing that can completely show the science is good is the ability to reproduce the experiment.. and even that isn't 100% sufficient as its always possible we're overlooking some tiny aspect.
.
Take for example, Newton's gravitation -- works perfectly well in 99% of every case ever tested, and its still used for all but the most sensitive of tasks.. but there's that tiny adjustment in the orbit of Mercury that threw the whole damned ball over the Einstein. And we already know general relativity and quantum mechanics aren't compatible so its likely even Einstein isn't 100% correct. Its only going to take one well-thought-out experiment (or more likely, one lucky observation of some patch of sky) to find that gap and set us scrambling to replace GR with an even more fundamental theory (or maybe QM.. or both.. but my money's on GR being less correct simply due to QED in particular being so ridiculously well tested while GR has only really been "tested" by watching the sky and hoping we luck into something interesting -- we've definitely done better than the orbit of Mercury by now but still not even in the ballpark of QED's experimental accuracy bounds.)

One of my favorite things about this is the idea that we are leaning our heads down when we used to not do so. Most jobs require you to have your head turned down a lot of the time, even going back to before computers. As a biology researched, I spend a large portion of most days looking down at samples, and most scientists have for a long time. If the hypothesis were true that looking down at your phone is causing people to have growths on their skulls, an interesting group to test against would be scientists. We are constantly looking down for our jobs.

I love how people who really wanted this to be true grabbed onto the first sensational story that confirms their bias.
Probably same people who overshares those smart meter/5G/Electrosensitive stories. The technical and scientific concerns are a different matter.

I opted out of the smart meters for my home. My electric company, AEP, charges an extra $24 fee each month to defray the cost of sending out someone to read the meter reader. Which is fine with me, I'm willing to pay that price. I didn't opt out because I'm an electrosensitivity a nutjob. Rather, I have privacy worries regarding smart meters. Also, I'm concerned that eventually, the electric company will charge more per kilowatt hour for electric use during peak times.

When I saw the headline on a news article, I almost immediately dismissed the alleged "horns", but when reading the article, the idea that bone growths might be developing to support a certain head posture seemed reasonable. Now I find out that even that was mistaken reporting. They really dropped the ball all the way around.

If CNN is so trustworthy, how come they don't report on China's genocide, their labor camps, and countless other evils? I'm sure it has nothing to do with all of the business ties they have with China that makes them money.

Thank you for setting this straight. I am not taking courses this semester so I didn't have access to the paper. I wanted to know why it would be a new thing since my first thought was monks translating and writing texts, plus other various jobs where people could have bad posture and also why nothing clear was explained for the bone protrusions since I'm a little familiar with them. I have been looking at the news articles on this with a skeptical look since saw it. Thank you for being a fairly good reliable source for scientific information. Definitely sharing this video.

Yes, thank you, I will admit that I believe the story when I saw it and in my defense the X-Ray shown, plus the fact that they reference the Study in a Scientific journal and I was convince. Also, I have never before heard of these protrusions on the back of our heads.

What I'm afraid is the implications for the children for those the parents actually believe it. The hardcore parents would take away their phone and without phone most kids wouldn't be able to provide evidence that their parents are wrong

When I first heard this, I knew it was sensationalized and probably garbage, but what immediately struck me was that it was specifically targeted at phones. Literally any task that has you bending down could cause EOPs; I have one on my skull, yet I grew up barely using phones.

I had a flip phone, and a slide phone, in the early 2000s for ages, rarely using it outside of calls (that's basically all it did). Even when I got my first "smart phone," I still barely used it. But I spent hours and hours looking down... for school! Sitting at a desk for 6+ hours a day, hunched over a book or test or quiz, then coming home and spending 1-3hrs hunched over homework. These articles clearly choose to ignore the very common act of millions of students hunching over their work, and instead just mention phone usage. It's very flawed writing for a paper, irresponsible peer review, and irresponsible click-baity article writing.

As soon as my mother sent this to me I told her it was pseudoscience... she didn’t believe me even though I’m a scientist who knows a lot about osteology (I’m a paleoanthropologist) glad you cleared this up. I’ll have to send it to her and pull an I told you so 😊

This is actually the first explanation/refutation of this stupid story I have seen, thanks.
I'm used to the media screwing up science reporting, but in this case the issue is compounded by incompetent peer review in a supposedly "respectable" journal. Journalists need to be trained in science reporting, but it seems some scientists do too!

Funny, when someone sent that news story to me, I went like "that sounds dumb", went to look up the paper and found some of the issues mentioned here just by looking over it for ten minutes.

I have that same bone and i have been wondering why for almost 30 years now. I never really read about it or ask anyone about it. Its odd, its kind of pointy and makes me feel weird when i sleep on it. It even hurts if i sleep on a floor or some other places. Especially if i sit/lay on bench (wooden) or anything hard (plastic?).

I doubt its from phones, cuz i had it from before the computer days lol (at least here)

Here in Brazil, the public opinion on science and scientists is not that good and unfortunately bad journalism and wrongly-done science are common. Because of this, science's credibility drops and no one wants the public money spent on research.

As far as I know, every male has a spur in the middle back of the skull, above where the neck begins. And females usually don't. That is, how you can differntiate between male and female skeletons/skulls in archeology. And yes, I too have such a spur

Ironically the part where the bone is supposedly growing is where I've been having severe pain. I've been having really severe headaches/neck pain there. So I was kind wondering since I use my tablets a lot as well as crafting things. Luckily the nerve ablation & norvasc seems to have eased the headaches a lot. Plus I'm trying to not keep my neck bent for hours.

Somebody make a Spanish version of this so I can show my mom. The other day when we were watching the news on Telemundo this showed up and I could not stop laughing trying to tell her that clearly the people on the network didn't fact check this with whatever paper said it was true. It's kinda sad that they would show that kind of thing when there are people that are not as knowledgeable about that kind of thing. I'm glad this video was made to being awareness to this bad science. Definitely will be showing this to my mom. Thanks so much!

To any journalists reading this. Press releases by universities may overhype findings too, afterall they typically want to get publicity. Take up contact with the primary author (first name) or principle investigator (last name).
