I've been building and selling bunk beds for the past couple years, but through another company and it was very difficult to market myself because of their constraints. With the pandemic, I had to stop entirely and am no longer contracted with that company. (I don't mind - gotta put others' safety first).
Now I'm taking this opportunity and I'm in the process of designing and prototyping my own furniture, which I can market as I wish.

@A Hover I always sand between coats. But I like a "smooth as glass" finish. On rustic looking furniture you don't want to sand between coats. I would probably use liquid sander to allow good adhesion of additional coats.

@Bryan you could make some of those signs that people hang on their walls. Some people just use pallet wood. The wood burning skill would really set your product apart. Most people use paint and stencils.

@Bryan ive watched a few pallet furniture vids and 1 of my favorites is the guy taking a hand torch to the wood and the grains just jump out especially after a Lil staining and or polyurethane !!!... And the best part of pallets are... Most of them are usually 100 % free in my area !!!!... Just thought I might help you with an idea if you haven't thought of that one yet buddy !!.. Those stove covers are something I've never seen before and I'm planning on making one for myself, mostly because I would like extra work area for making and kneading bread, so I think I'll add some rubber gorilla glue mat to the bottom for grip and put in some hooks so I can attach it above the stove and maybe use it as an extra storage/spice rack right under the microwave.

As a woodworker and musician, I agree with almost everything you just said. What I didn't agree with? When a family member buys from you, he/she is trying to support your business. Giving a discount would be ironic. If a family member is struggling and you wanna help him/her out, you could have them buy the materials while you do the work for free, and have him/her help you build it. That way he/she will appreciate how much hard work is put into woodworking.

I've been a carpenter for about 17 years now. I've always said that I wanted to make furniture for a side hustle but never researched what would sell good. This video popped up in my suggested videos and I have to tell you that it has given me a kick in the rear to get going. I love how basic and beautiful these projects are. I knew instantly that they would sell. I see stuff like this in houses all of the time! I know I have the skills and tools to do it so now it's time to get started!

My man, I built myself a workbench a couple months ago, and I really enjoyed it. Since then I've built 6 foot desks for my daughters and a shiplap daybed style headboard. And just today I sold a desk and set of matching shelves to a friend for about $75 profit. Took several days and was really underpriced, but I learned some new skills and it paid for a new shop vac to help keep the dust at bay lol. I really appreciate your honesty in pricing too. Most videos cop out when it comes around to pricing. While it's not a guarantee, it definitely gives an idea of where they should be priced and what people will pay. Going to watch more of your videos now!

Beautiful work! Very informative and transparent video, talking about pricing and all. Just a consideration for folks, look at how much similar items cost in a furniture store, usually pretty high for much less quality than you're going to be able to build. Also, custom options are always worth more, with anything home related. All of these pieces are great, but I can definitely see why those kennels are a hot item too👍

With a lot of the rentals here in NWA, at least the few I've lived in, having limited counter space those stove covers would probably sell fairly well. Been flipping dressers but would love to venture into something else as well.

Very helpful information here. I’m just getting started in woodworking, and have been sitting here pricing tools and scratching my head trying to figure out how to make this work. You gave me the answer I was looking for - wait. Do what I can with what I have, and go from there.

I just finished a double dog kennel for our home, and my wife showed it off on her face page. It’s gotten unbelievable reviews and so many people are wanting me to build them one now. That is nerve wracking for be because it was my first one, and it was quite the pain in the butt. But it turned out really cool and now I know how I did it, so I’m thinking about taking on a couple more over time. Obviously, the right tools would have made it much easier and faster, but my old skil saw and drill did the job (just took awhile). Anyway, thanks for the info, looking forward to kicking out some more projects here soon.

Hi Matt. First of all I want to say thanks for your content. Yours is the channel I got the most out of when I decided to try and build and sell furniture. Now a specific question. I've sold 2 farmhouse coffee tables modeled after you're Chunky table build. The bottom shelf is attached with pocket hole screws from the bottom to the ends. My question is, would 43 inches be too long a span to attach the shelf using that method. I'm thinking it might sag in the middle at that length. My customer wants a tv stand like the coffee table but 60 inches long and more narrow by half. I didn't want to do a 3rd leg assembly in the middle because more open looks better IMO. I know your probably too busy to answer these kind of questions all the time but I thought I'd ask for your feedback. Thanks, and keep em coming. The channel is great!

Thanks for the continued support. I don’t “think” it would sag. But a good hack would be to rip a board about 2” wide and the same thickness as your shelf and turn it up edge ways and attach to each side the length of the shelf. That would put the edge grain on that board facing up instead of to the sides. Put one of those on each side glued to the shelf. That would add significant support. Hope that makes sense.

I've lately made and sold some collapsable puzzle boards. They've really grown popular during these special times. Very simple things really. 2 or 3 parts, with a decent surrounding frame/collar. Use a router on the underside to make pockets for the hinges, so it sits flush on the surface. Then use latches on the sides to hold it securely when it's folded out, so you can pick it up and move it oit of the way. I use latches with an adjustment mechanism on it. That way the mounting don't have to be absolutely 100% precise. Overly tight and the boards bows up a bit and wobbles in use, too loose and the board collapses a tiny bit when lifting it, causing the puzzle to separate some times. It also makes them long term durable, as you can easily tension it up a bit if it gets a little loose with wear and tear over time.

I considered pocketing the hinges on the top of the surface and dropping the locking hinges, to simplify the design. But while you can lift it without it collapsing - if you set it down unevenly or knock it into something, it then easily "collapses upwards".

@731 Woodworks They sure are 🙂 It's woodworking wise very simple, the most complex part is routing the pockets for the hinges on the underside so it sits flush - so not a very difficult project at all. I usually end up trying different laquer+stain combo stuff on the surfaces and collars to spice them up a bit, but found that while very dark stains might look visually fancy, they can be less ideal for something that's practically a work surface for small things with small details. The small collar around the board (to keep pieces from falling off) can be quite dark, but I try to not go too dark on the main surface.

For a simpler version, you could definitely use a simpler, cheaper latch to lock it in folded out position. Just remember that if using a standard hinge, you're locking the parts at maximum extension / distance between point A and B on the side of the board. So a standard hook and eye latch won't properly lock it in that position. Those work best for stopping something from being pulled further apart, and you're already at maximum distance.

I found the simplest locking design, to be two blocks attached to the each side close to the joint. Drill straight holes through them. When folding the board out straight, they line up, and you just shove an appropriate sized dowel or aluminium tube through both pieces (I personally prefer the aluminium tube for structural integrity). If you attach those blocks with the "pin" inside while the board sits perfectly flat, you don't need any adjustment; it should only lock in thst position then and stay that way fairly solid. And it'll probably last for many years of active use.

Wow! Awesome, i formative video that gave me some great ideas to try! Back in January, i renovated my Chiropractic office... mostly by myself...but had a couple guys help with more involved parts that i was completely unfamiliar with... i went with a 'country chic' style... a barn door on rolling rails..some corrugated metal accents, .shiplap on a couple walls, and I built 3 rustic garden benches. Building & staining those benches was fun and therapeutic. Some ladies from a hair salon in the building LOVED how they looked and sat...I said that I was taking orders for them and they both jumped at the chance! And they didn't bat an eye at the $175 pricetag.
I think I'll try some end tables and kennel tables this winter!

The cost of any solid wood board in the UK here is extoritionately high... so much so it makes wood working a difficult side hustle. Also if you do use Pine what is the general feel you get from your customers when using that material?

Great video - much appreciated. I've been woodworking for years and have made a lot of stuff for our house and have always wondered about making stuff to sell. I'd love to see you do a video on HOW to sell these (ie. locally, internet, etc.), maybe what sites, or if in person, give some examples. Do people come to you to pick up, do you have to deliver, etc. One last thing is how do you get the product to the customer? Ship it - if so, how much does that cost, what shipping companies do you recommend, etc. All of this is totally unknown to me and all of it just scares me off from the possibility to actually do something like this. I know I've got the woodworking skill, I just don't know how to actually make the rest of it work.

Amazing stuff I did woodworking in shop back in the day, Im not confident in my measuring accuracy. I did buy a 12 inch Hitachi miter saw. Still in the box I need to work with. My confidence in doing professional work I haven't touched one ever I used a band saw. This was a great video.

Glad it was helpful. That’s a nice saw. Use good safety practices and start building. Try starting by building yourself something. See how that goes and make changes on the next build if needed.

great video i am really new into woodworking only and only made a few items, a blanket ladder, simple wood crate , and 2 out of 5 yard Yahtzee die ( i need to get more 4x4) the yard Yahtzee is super simple and being an avid camper it may sell well at the different campgrounds we visit each year, i believe its like 5 sets of die per 4x4 forstner bit for the holes, the template is basically what a 6 on a die looks like plus one in the center, that will give you all the number configurations, great video and i look forward to watching more of your videos.

When the whole covid 19 started in my area I started to mess around with wood and was able to make a coffee table with Chevron top and added it to my ig story and a friend of a friend saw it and she asked me to make her a desk whith the Chevron design and I had no idea how much to charge her since it was literally learning myself.. I only charged her $260 because she was a friend but lol I so under charged her it took me forever and it come solid and she wanted to Xs on the frame and the chevron top. This video made me get excited about woodworking again. Thank you. I need to start new projects. I also made a dinning table for my little mobile home and a bed frame but that's just for me and my girl bc we needed this anyways. Thank you again

By the way, I have two Ryobi cordless routers. I'm doing a huge project where I'm making interior barn doors. I have to chamfer the edges of countless pieces. I have a chamfer bit in one that I never touch. I don't want different chamfers on different doors. The other router I will change as necessary. The router without the battery was $69. Not a big deal to let remain idle most of the time. I used one of them to cut dados in plywood when I made Steve Ramsey's wood storage cart (Woodworking for Mere Mortals). It took about 4 passes to cut each one, but I did it eventually. The cart is great. Bought big casters at Harbor Freight. I work in a garage, so everything must be compact .

Great video, brother! I've been building custom items for a while, but recently started selling. The pricing aspect is the toughest for me. Do you factor consumables into your sales price? ie. Sandpaper, stain, drill bits, etc?

Awesome video, great ideas. I would just like to say one thing. Console tables are shallow wide and tall tables the go behind couches or against walls like in an entry. Not like a kitchen microwave stand that you described it as.

Seen your videos on Facebook. I have always loved wood working but never done it for a living. I just sold my welder and bought a table saw. Also grabbed a sander and some clamps. I am going to give it a shot. Thank you for giving me the kick in the rear I needed! My wife passed in june at only 36 years old so needed some motivation to get me out of my depression. This video was definitely not what I was expecting. Which is good, cause I've seen a bunch of those videos. It does make me wonder though. What I was expecting, and what most of the videos I've seen include, are more the "batch" type of items. Stuff that you can make cheap and quick, and sell cheap and quick; like clipboards, cutting boards, basic wine cup holders, coasters, etc. Is it difficult to sell these more elaborate types of projects just starting out, or are you intending this as a step up from those more "starter" projects? I would think the kind of person willing to spend $500+ for a dog kennel would want a level of craftsmanship that I couldn't put out after only doing this for a few months or a year.
I'm not trying to argue or even disagree, just simply asking to hopefully clarify or better understand. In any case I really enjoyed the video, and it was refreshingly original. I subscribed and turned notifications on, and look forward to checking out more of your content.

Matt - I've been building a set of custom double doors for an archway inside my house - pretty challenging as one of my first projects. I'm almost finished and what would be great would be to put some small farmhouse windows in them - the old-style kind with 6 or 9 panes. I've looked online and found some of these windows for sale on Etsy - both antique and new. They are usually pretty expensive and usually built as exterior windows. Have you built this kind of window before? It would seem to be somewhat straightforward, but if I put real glass in them, they would need to be rock solid. I"m looking for something that is 18-19 inches wide by 25-29 inches tall. Also - it looks like farmhouse style windows are selling like crazy online, mostly for interior decorating, but also for projects like mine.

I had a question. What kind of wood do you usually use for your furniture? Doesn't look like anything super nice but also doesn't look like dimensional lumber from Home Depot. Great video though!

Thanks. It is common yellow pine on most of the frames and table tops. Easily accessible, affordable and works very well for this style furniture. I also will use spruce on shelves, stove covers, etc.

Wow, so glad I stopped by! My kids moved out (I am single mom), no money for furniture. I decided to find out if I could make it for them. I started with a garden bench. they loved it. I moved on to end tables, entry tables, coffee tables. Loved it. Then one girl got her own place, and the problem was no tv stand she liked. So I made each a tv stand, both of them very different (they had their own wants and finishes --yep both custom stains, sizes, heights, lol), so I decided to see if I could successfully design with fireplace and barn doors. that barn door hardware is expensive! so I figured out how to make my own by wandering around home depot for ideas, lol. Both came out great, and a lot of their friends are asking me to build for them. I also made bar carts that look great in the kitchen and roll on wheels. One has a removable tray, the other tray is secured (clumsy daughter). And it is fun challenging myself to design and build with only a miter saw, a drill and that kreg. So yeah, it can be done, and your video is excellent. Thank you so much for sharing! But caution...make sure the wood is DRY, or you will, like me, be rebuilding a barn door. sigh. lesson learned!

Awesome idea! I also suggest trying to dabble in scratch posts, cat trees and stuff like that. Requires very basic skills and almost no materials (some natural fibre cord like jute, hemp, flax, and/or upholstery fabric, wood). And prices for those things are ridiculous, make an "artsy" one and you can even double it. I made a few with firewood and fabric from a carpet someone threw away.

Kreg has the best customer support!
I have the K4 Pocket Hole Jig.
I did something stupid and sheared off the drill guide locking pin (a set screw that holds the drill block in place) and the drill block was locked in place; no way to back the drill guide stub out of the drill block hole.
I called Kreg support and they sent me a new K4, no questions asked.

They are great. My K5 vise messed up because I over righted it on something. I reached out to them and they sent me a replacement vise at no cost to me. This was after my warranty period too!

Thanks a lot. You gave me a lot to think about. I've been woodworking for close to 30 years, made a few bucks here and there. Wasn't really doing it for money or for others. True here in Montreal, the market is a lot tougher, cause people here in Quebec, simply wish to get everything for free. So it's a bit tougher!
But now due to the fact that I can't work anymore due to my health, I am looking for ways to start making a little money. I have to start REbuying my tools all over again, due to all that we had to sell when I got sick back in 2010. So I lost everything. So I have to start all over again.
I'm a strong Adirondack furniture builder, always have been. It's a good market in the north. So I can still keep that up! But thanks for the ideas that what could possibly sell best and for a few good ideas. I hope you don't mind if I take a few of your ideas while putting a little of myself in em while trying to sell em? So Thanks for your video, for your ideas, and for REopening my eyes, to the fact that I may not be the same man I was "nothing I can do for that" But I'm still here and I still have a chance to do something with these hands of mine and make some money to help raise my family.
