Don't Have Time
Good Riddance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All the lies that the papers said
You can't base your life on what you've read
It's safe and so sterilized
And there's an urgency to the things you find
You'll beat the curve if you wait in line
Don't break your heart this time
And let it all unwind
Just what have we done?
We killed a mothers only son
Just to remain at number one
But I don't have time in my life for this
Stand at the brink of a precipice
And those same old fears arise
With eyes to drawn to counteract
The ghost in you comes rushing back
Too caustic to subside
We parade our benevolence block out the sun
Through decades of reveries still number one

It's always the same as the words die on our tongues
Seek your comfort from above

Overall Meaning

In "Don't Have Time," Good Riddance is addressing the falsehood and toxicity of mainstream media and its role in shaping public opinion. They urge listeners not to base their lives on what they read in papers because it is often safe, sterilized, and lacks urgency. The lyrics suggest that conformity, waiting in line, and blindly following the curve will ultimately result in heartbreak and being stuck in the same cycle of behavior. The song highlights the vicious cycle of trying to stay at number one by killing innocents, which in turn creates a cycle of fear and paranoia. The second verse delves deeper into the personal fears and ghosts that arise when standing at the edge of a precipice. The final lines encourage seeking comfort from a higher power rather than relying on the flawed system and society at large.

This is awesome! Good Riddance are amazingly consistent knocking out perfect, timeless punk classics every single album!

I love the whole 90's skatepunk and melodic hardcore sound and it's awesome that so many of the original bands are still around or reforming (even Cigar are releasing a new EP soon, yay!) and these guys have it down to a "T" along with fantastic, insightful and meaningful lyrics.

GR have been my favourite band since I first listened to "For God And Country" back in '95! I'm sooo happy they're still going (and just as good as ever) and am beyond stoked for the new album, can't wait!

Keep it up guys and keep on flying the flag for all of us old punk dudes! Thank you!

Todd

Edit, holy shit you're not joking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaCOF-f3y20
