Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Goran Bregovic's Ederlezi are a combination of Romani and Serbian languages. The song is about the celebration of Ederlezi, which is a Romani festival that marks the beginning of spring. The opening lines "Sa me amala oro kelana" means "With my black eyes, I have traveled" and "oro kelana, dive kerna" means "I have crossed the seas, wandered places". The song is an expression of the Romani people's longing for freedom and adventure, a common theme in their culture.

The chorus "Ederlezi, Ederlezi, Sa o Roma daje" is a celebratory expression of the festival. The phrase "Sa o Roma daje" means "The Roma are going". The repetition of "Sa o Roma babo babo" in the verses is an ode to the Romani men and fathers.

The Romani culture is deeply rooted in Balkan music, and Ederlezi is a prime example of it. The song has been performed by many artists and was featured in Emir Kusturica's film "Time of the Gypsies". Ederlezi is a well-known Romani festival celebrated in various parts of Europe. The festival is also known as Herdeljezi or Đurđevdan.

Ederlezi is a festival celebrating the return of springtime, made by the Roma - romanis- gypsies of the balkans.
They use to slaughter lambs as a sacrifice. This is a sad song because the singer is poor and has not lambs to sacrifice.
Nevertheless, at the end of the song the singer is happy because the gipsies gave him a lamb for sacrifice:

All my friends are dancing the oro
Dancing the oro, celebrating the day
All the Roma, mommy
All the Roma, dad, dad
All the Roma, oh mommy
All the Roma, dad, dad
Ederlezi, Ederlezi
All the Roma, mommy

All the Roma, dad, they slaughter lambs
But me, poor, I am sitting apart
A Romany day, our day
Our day, Ederlezi

The Roma give, dad, a lamb for us
All the Roma, dad, they slaughter lambs
All the Roma, dad, dad
All the Roma, oh mommy
All the Roma, dad, dad
Ederlezi, Ederlezi
All the Roma, mommy
