It's All In the Game
Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra/Louis Armstrong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Many a tear has to fall, but it's all in the game
All in the wonderful game that we know as love
You have words with him and your future's looking dim
But these things your hearts can rise above

Once in a while he won't call, but it's all in the game
Soon he'll be there at your side with a sweet bouquet
And he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips
And your heart will fly away

(Soon he'll be there at your side) with a sweet bouquet

Then he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips
And your heart will fly away

Overall Meaning

The song, "It's All in the Game" by Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra/Louis Armstrong, shows a deep understanding of love and its complexities. The opening lyrics, "Many a tear has to fall, but it's all in the game," suggest that love, like a game, has its ups and downs. The singer acknowledges that tears and heartbreak are regular occurrences in love, but that they are all part of the process. The song reinforces the idea that love is a journey, and that the lows and highs are all part of the bigger picture.

The lyrics go on to suggest that love is a wonderful game, with its own set of rules and challenges. The verse, "You have words with him, and your future's looking dim, but these things your hearts can rise above," shows that disagreements and misunderstandings are common in relationships, but that there is always a way to work through them, especially when both parties are invested in the relationship. When the verse, "And he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips, and your heart will fly away," comes in, it's clear that the highs in love are worth the challenges. The highs are what make the tears and heartbreaks worth it, and the singer suggests that the sweetness of the moments when the relationship is going well is worth all the struggles that came before.

wow...thats the first time i heard this...i always thought tommy edwards was the original...thanks...

@jaye501

+johnm893 edwards was first in a way.... satchmo wasn't first either... dinah shore and edwards first released it at the same time in early 51... but edwards first version in 51 was different from the version that finally became a hit in 58... i think satch and sammy kaye put out their versions around the same time in late 51... but even in 51 edwards early version was the best seller.... years later edwards wrote the hit song "hey there lonely girl" sung by eddie holman.... eddie did a version of all in the game that is outstanding...

Tomorrow Edwardsalso recorded it with lyrics in 1951. The he re-recorded it in 1958 which was huge hits number 1 record in USA and in UK. It stayed high on list of top 10 gor weeks the restislegedary history.
This is pretty by Louis Armstrong......but none had the "it" factor Tommy gave to it. Over the years many have recorded it as a cover.. Tommy Efwards made it an unforgettable hit. RiP. Tommy Edwards. We remember you and your hit songs.
