Fire
Gordon Robert Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm drivin' in my car, you turn on the radio
I'm pullin' you close, but you just say no
You say you don't like it, but girl I know you're a liar
Cause when we kiss, ooh, fire

Late at night, I'm chasing you home
I say I want to stay, you say you want to be alone
You say you don't need me, but you can't hide your desire
Cause when we kiss, ooh, fire

You've had a hold on me right from the start
It felt so good, I couldn't tear it apart
Got my nerves all jumpin', actin' like a fool
Cause your kisses they burn, but your heart stays cool

Romeo and Juliet, Samson and Delilah
Baby, you can bet the love they couldn't deny
Well, now your words say split, but your words they lie
Cause when we kiss, ooh, fire

Oh, oh, fire
Fire

Oh, oh, fire
Oh, oh, fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gordon Robert's song "Fire" depict a situation where the singer is in love with someone who seemingly keeps rejecting his advances. Despite the rejection, he insists on pursuing the person because he knows they desire him too. As the song progresses, the singer reveals that he feels like a fool, but he cannot help being drawn to the other person because their kisses ignite a fire in him.

The song's lyrics are perhaps a representation of the intense and often unpredictable nature of love. It is common to be drawn to someone who may not seem interested at first, as is the case in this song. The singer's insistence on pursuing the other person despite their initial rejection is also relatable, as people often take chances in love, especially when there are strong signals of mutual attraction.

The chorus of the song, where the singer repeatedly sings "Oh, oh, fire," is a testimony to how the other person makes him feel. The lyrics suggest that the kisses they share create a burning desire that he cannot resist.

In conclusion, Gordon Robert's "Fire" is an evocative song about the intensity and unpredictability of love. The lyrics capture the singer's deep attraction to a person who initially seems disinterested but eventually reciprocates the feeling.

When this record came out in the late 70s it was like someone turned the light on and the room lit up. A breath of fresh air!

Excellent cover! Like it better than Springsteen’s version

Tobias Gibson

@Mark Osborn, you are correct! Gordon was first. Thanks for correcting me.

Mark Osborn

It's not a cover Springsteen wrote this for Robert Gordon

@jefdarcy, I can’t recall Springsteen’s version of the live album. I just had a studio bootleg of Springsteen’s. It was pretty cool. This was the first version I had heard. Probably why I liked it best. Been a long time. But yeah, hard to beat just about any live Springsteen. Cut.

There just has to be a comment like this under every less-known version of a well-known song, I guess. I think this version is pretty lackluster and weaker than both the Pointer Sisters' version and Bruce's version off Live 1975-85 (which is by far my favorite recording of this song).

Robert Gordon's FIRE was the first released version of the song and released on his 1978 LP Fresh Fish Special. It was then later released by the Pointer Sisters in Nov 1979 and that's all according to Wikipedia - The first released recording of "Fire" was by neo-rockabilly singer Robert Gordon who had met Springsteen through E Street Band bass player Garry Tallent. They remained on friendly terms before Springsteen gave Gordon the song "Fire" after seeing a live gig by Gordon and Link Wray. According to Gordon, "it was a choice between 'Fire' and another new song but [Springsteen] decided to keep the other one for himself."[7] Springsteen played piano on Gordon's recording of "Fire" which was released on Gordon's 1978 album Fresh Fish Special, recorded in December 1977 at Plaza Sound Studios in Manhattan with veteran rock 'n' roll producer Richard Gottehrer co-producing with Gordon. Gordon's version received airplay on album-oriented rock radio stations and his version of "Fire" spent 14 weeks in the Record World 101-150 Singles chart rising as high as no. 106 in September 1978

I bought Robert Gordon’s LP when I was a high school student. At that time I liked this song not so much but now I love the song very much.

I'm posting to this version, because I dont want the video to destroy the image in my head of this song.
