I have been an aficionado of R&B for many years. One night in the 1980's I was returning home in NYC in a taxicab from a night of DJ'ing at a club. I was talking to the driver and I noticed his name was Rosco Gordon. I told him there was a famous R&B singer named Rosco Gordon, and he said "That's me" I was in shock! I said, "what are you doing driving a cab?" He said, "what else am I gonna do, sit around with my wife?" I'll go crazy"
Anyway, it was him, we talked a lot and I saw his name in a newspaper doing a blues festival. You never know who you'll meet in NYC.

Paul McCartney has admitted that this song influenced him when he wrote the Beatles' song "Birthday". If you listen to this Rosco Gordon song, you can imaginne hearing the lyrics for "Birthday" ("you say it's your birthday"..."gonna have a good time"...) inbetween the horn riff.

A lot is said about Led Zep borrowing heavily from blues artists, but the Beatles did it just as much with R&B & popular music artists, & acknowledged as much on the 1990's Beatles TV special (Anthology with the three remaining Beatles) regarding several of their songs, playing sound bytes from the original R&B & pop songs next to the Beatles songs they influenced. One example is Lennon's "I Feel Fine" & Bobby Parker's "Watch Your Step" (which also influenced Led Zep's "Moby Dick", & the riff in the popular blues song "One Way Out").

Great song! It has been covered by many artists, including Elvis, the Beatles, Little Milton, and Etta James. Rosco never received royalties for the song because Ralph Bass at King Records stole the song from a demo Rosco sent him and had it copyrighted.

BTW Slade did a cover of this, and it was on their not so successful LP in 1974, "Stomp Your Hands and Clap Your Feet". You either liked Noddy Holder's vocal on this tune, or hated it. BTW I hated it!!!!!!

Rory was the man! Got a chance to see him several times over the years. On his last trip through the U.S. west coast, I was able to trade picks with him. When I handed him mine, he did a double take and looked at me and shook his head and laughed. It was a Herco Heavy like he used. He was the reason I used them when playing with a pick and that is just what I told him. Very cool guy. RIP Rory. God bless.
