In Slow Country, Gorillaz/Spacemonkeyz tackles the complexities of city life, the search for purpose, and the noisy reality of loneliness. The song opens with a call of the city, which is always present and beckons. The singer of the song, along with the soul inside them, is “geared to attack” - a phrase that connotes ferocity and fearlessness. This drive comes with the knowledge that they may not get another chance, so the narration calls out 'what you doing? gotta get money, keeping me real.'
Being truly alone is unbearable, and the next part of the song laments this. The reality of the 'shit night life' is trying to hide inner pain and putting up a brave face despite the emptiness. The singer tells us that loving what you do doesn't always equate to money. For them, moving out of the city is the next logical thing to do, as there is a sense of a new beginning and a second chance for something better. There will be problems, but many have been kicked already.
