"Erm….I don’t really know what to say about this track, y’know, like Frank Zappa said “talking about music is like fishing about architecture”. This track just works. I don’t want to talk about it. Is that, OK?"
Band member Murdoc Niccals in an interview with NME
Broken
Gorillaz Lyrics

Come in black or red
I've seen their worlds
Inside my head
They connect
With the fall of man
They breathe you inAnd dive as deep as they can
There's nothing you can do for them
They are the force between
When the sunlight is arising
There's nothing you can say to him
He is an outer heart
And the space has been broken
It's broken
Our love
Broken
It's broken
Our love
Is it far away in the
Glitter freeze
Or in our eyes
Every time they meet
It's by the light
Of the plasma screens
We keep switched on
All through the night while we sleep
There's nothing you can do for them
They are the force between
When the sunlight is arising
There's nothing you can say to her
I am without a heart
And the space has been broken
It's broken
Our love
Broken
It's broken
Our love
Broken
It's broken
Our love
Broken
It's broken
Our love
Broken
The song "Broken" by Gorillaz is a melancholic and introspective track with cryptic lyrics that explore themes of love, loss, and alienation in a rapidly changing world. The first verse sets the tone with its enigmatic imagery of distant stars coming in black or red and the singer having seen their worlds inside their head. The second line of the verse, "They connect with the fall of man", suggests a deeper connection between humans and the cosmic forces that shape their lives, while the lines "They breathe you in and dive as deep as they can" convey a sense of inevitability and surrender to these forces.
The chorus repeats the phrase "It's broken, our love" four times, emphasizing the central theme of the song - the brokenness of the singer's relationship. The second verse adds more layers of complexity to the song's meaning, describing a futuristic landscape where love is reduced to the flickering light of plasma screens and the singer feels like they are without a heart. The line "We keep switched on all through the night while we sleep" evokes a sense of disconnection and artificiality, as if the characters are trapped in a never-ending cycle of consumption and distraction.

Distant stars
Stars that are far away
Come in black or red
Their appearance depends on the wavelength of light, which determines their color
I've seen their worlds
I have imagined what their planets might look like
Inside my head
In my imagination
They connect
They bring people together in various ways
With the fall of man
Since the beginning of humanity
They breathe you in
Stars have a powerful influence on people
And dive as deep as they can
People explore the meaning of stars and their place in the universe
There's nothing you can do for them
They are beyond your control
They are the force between
People who are drawn together by some powerful, unseen force
When the sunlight is arising
At the beginning of a new day
There's nothing you can say to him
He is indifferent to your words
He is an outer heart
He is detached and unfeeling
And the space has been broken
The distance that separated them has been destroyed
It's broken
Their relationship is over
Our love
Their romantic attachment
Is it far away in the
What if it is distant and out of reach
Glitter freeze
A state of being frozen or trapped by materialism and superficiality
Or in our eyes
Perhaps it still exists in their love for each other
Every time they meet
Whenever they come face to face
It's by the light
The source of their vision
Of the plasma screens
Screens on electronic devices like televisions or computers
We keep switched on
We never turn them off
All through the night while we sleep
Even though we are not actively using them
There's nothing you can say to her
She won't listen to your words
I am without a heart
She has become cold and unfeeling

I discovered this album very late. Now I'm in love with this song and its oniric atmosphere.
I wish a live action Gorillaz movie.
And I wish a scene with this song:
// Foggy dawn, 2d smoking on the balcony.
Murdoc shows him the lyrics of this song, 2d immediately likes it and asks him what inspired him.
Murdoc doesn't answer, but we see the flashback with kid Murdoc who assist to (and suffer himself) his father's abuse and violence.
"I am without a heart..."
Back to present, Murdoc stares into space.
2d takes a cigarette from the pack and hands it to him with a smile, without saying anything (...but from the smile he seems to have guessed what Murdoc doesn't say).
Murdoc takes the cigarette and, for a second, shows an human expression: a glimpse of fragility and gratitude. But it's just a brief moment. The scene ends with flashbacks of Noodle and Russel's traumas, alternating with the group's live performance.
It remind us they are all broken.//
