Magic City
Gorillaz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm on the high ridge looking down
While we're evolving, I get old
If I get back then I'll be grateful
Look there's a billboard on the moon

Let me take you this far
This crossing isn't much to me
There's lightning in the storm clouds
And I'll send you there to stay

You got me lost in Magic City
You got me questioning it all
I hope that I make it home by Wednesday
And this Magic City lets me go

Magic City
Magic City
Magic City
Magic City

You put me up here in the penthouse
And painted me in red, white and blue
I filled the canyons with my ego
Look there's a billboard on the moon

You got me lost in Magic City
You got me questioning it all

I hope that I make it home by Wednesday
And this Magic City lets me go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Magic City" by Gorillaz describe the feeling of being lost or trapped in a futuristic cityscape, filled with billboards on the moon, canyons filled with ego, and lightning in the storm clouds. The singer is on a high ridge looking down on this landscape and reflecting on their own aging and evolution. They express a sense of gratitude for the possibility of returning home, but at the same time feel weighed down by the city's influence and uncertain about their own ability to navigate it. The repetition of the phrase "Magic City" throughout the song conveys a sense of both wonder and unease, and creates a dreamlike quality to the overall experience.

At its core, "Magic City" seems to be a commentary on the ways in which technology, urbanization, and cultural hegemony can impact our sense of self and connection to the world around us. The billboards on the moon and the ego-filled canyons suggest a hyper-capitalist, postmodern landscape that allows little room for individuality or meaningful connection. The lightning in the storm clouds adds a sense of danger and urgency to the situation, suggesting that the singer's predicament is not just existential, but potentially life-threatening.

Overall, "Magic City" is a haunting and evocative song that speaks to the challenges of living in a world that is constantly changing and often alienating. Its powerful imagery and introspective lyrics make it a standout track in Gorillaz's already impressive discography.

Listened to this song in the backsit of the car while we were driving in the highway at night, everything around was so dark, the only lights were the red lights from other cars and the orange lights from the poles passing by. This song suited so much the surroundings and this feeling that I had at the moment, I don't really know how to explain.... One of the most magical moments of my life
