To Binge
Gorillaz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Waiting by the mailbox, by the train
Passin' by the hills 'til I hear the name
I'm looking for a saw to cut these chains in half and all I want is
Someone to rely on as
Thunder comes a rolling down
Someone to rely on as
Lightning comes a staring in again
I'll wait to be forgiven
Maybe I never will
My star has left me
To take the bitter pill
That shattered feeling
Well the cause of it's a lesson learned
Just don't know if I could roll into the sea again
Just don't know if I could do it all again she said, it's true

Waiting in my room and I lock the door
I watch the colored animals across the floor
And I'm looking from a distance
And I'm listening to the whispers
And oh it ain't the same, when your falling out of feeling and your
Falling in and caught again (caught again)

I'm caught again in the mystery
You're by my side, but are you still with me?
The answer's somewhere deep in it, I'm sorry but your feeling it
But I just have to tell you that I love you so much these days
Have to tell you that I love you so much these days, it's true

My heart is in economy
Due to this autonomy
Rolling in and caught again
Caught again
Caught again
Caught again
My heart is in economy
Due to this autonomy

Rolling in and caught again
Caught again

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Gorillaz & Yukimi Nagano's song 'To Binge' sets a serious tone for the song, as the singer waits for someone to rely on while the sound of thunder and lightning rolls around them. The singer is searching for a way to break free, looking for a 'saw' to cut their chains in half, and all they want is 'someone to rely on'. The feeling of isolation and vulnerability is palpable in the lyrics, as the singer hints at bad experiences in their past, and is struggling to find the strength to face life's struggles again, such as rolling into the sea.

The singer's feelings of loneliness and helplessness are contrasted by the playful and fantastical imagery of the second verse, as the singer watches 'colored animals' move across the floor, and listens to mysterious whispers. The singer is 'caught again' in the mystery, questioning whether their companion is still with them, searching for answers to the problems they face. While on the surface, the lyrics may seem somewhat obscure, the emotions they evoke are universal, and many listeners relate to the feelings of isolation and struggle portrayed in the song.

Overall, 'To Binge' is a beautiful and moving song that captures the emotional turmoil of a struggling individual. Through its poignant lyrics and haunting melody, it reminds us of the importance of connection and support when facing life's challenges.

@cir0plus

This song reminds me of a friend of mine that committed suicide. I'll try to make it short:
My friend moved away and ran into the wrong crowd. She became addicted to drugs and lost everything because it.

"Waiting by the mailbox, by the train
Passin' by the hills 'til I hear the name"
Not sure if these will be one-to-one, but feel like this descripts her addiction. Always waiting for it to come.

"I'm looking for a saw to cut these chains in half and all I want is
Someone to rely on"
Pretty obliviously, but she didn't want to be addicted. I tried to be someone to rely on, even though I lived miles away.

"I'll wait to be forgiven
Maybe I never will"
After her death, I blamed myself for not doing more. I thought I could've done more to stop her from killing herself. I cried and lost sleep. Her funeral was held over 300 miles away and I couldn't make it. Took me about a month before I realized there was little I could have done to stop her.

"I'm caught again in the mystery
You're by my side, but are you still with me?
The answer's somewhere deep in it, I'm sorry that you're feeling it
But I just have to tell you that I love you so much these days"

She called the night before it happened. She said she was tired, but she might have been high. I couldn't tell, so I trusted her (one part of the blaming myself). The last thing she said to me was "I love you man". I still remember it to this day.

I just needed to get this out. Thinking of her, I keep blaming myself for not doing more. But if there is an afterlife, I know she wouldn't want me to do that.

If you read this, thank you.

Depression is so isolating. Addiction so misunderstood. Being lost in a familiar place is hard to describe.
