Careless Whisper
Gossip Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend.
To the heart and mind ignorance is kind.
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find.
I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm

Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool.
I should have known better than to cheat a friend

And waste a chance that I've been given.
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you.

I feel so unsure as I take your hand an lead you to the dance floor.
As the music dies something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen and you're its sad goodbye.
I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm

Never without your love.
Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd.
Maybe it's better this way

We'd hurt each other with the things we want to say.
We could have been so good together

We could have lived this dance forever

But now who's gonna dance with me? Please stay.
And I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm

Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool.
I should have known better than to cheat a friend

And waste a chance that I've been given.

So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you.

Overall Meaning

The song "Careless Whisper" by Gossip explores the guilt and regret felt by the singer after betraying the trust of a good friend. The lyrics suggest that the singer engaged in some kind of romantic or sexual relationship with the friend, which ultimately led to the end of their friendship. The line "time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend" suggests that the damage done to the friendship is irreparable.

The second verse describes the singer's feelings of uncertainty and sadness as they dance with the friend for what will likely be the last time. The line "tonight the music seems so loud" implies that the singer is trying to drown out their own thoughts and emotions. In the end, the singer realizes the gravity of their mistake and vows never to dance again the way they had with their friend.

The overall message of the song is that actions have consequences and that betraying the trust of a friend can have lasting, irreparable effects on a relationship. The lyrics also suggest that it is better to be honest and confront difficult truths rather than pretending everything is okay.

Been looking for a download of this since I heard it that day, what, 6, 8, years ago! Not a fan of covers of songs I like, but when she sang it I got what the song is about - George Michael never conveyed that for me, yet she did in a few bars worth. Never forgotten that moment :) fullest respect due.

Becky Smart I’ve always preferred this to George’s version. It was made for her.

@marksmarsh2039

was excited to hear this cover of one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite artists ever. Different spin on it [ just a little bit ha ha ] . Not careless whisper anymore but whatever it is it sounds cool

@carlnev1

If you look for the radio 1 at 40 album (i think thats what its called) when Radio 1 turned 40, artists were asked to cover a track from a particular year, this was The Gossip's contribution
