They formed in 1999. Their first release was Vuelvo Al Sur/El Capitalismo Foráneo in 2000, followed by the album La Revancha del Tango in 2001. Their music is clearly tango, but also uses electronic elements such as samples, beats and breaks.
Live material was broadcast on Gilles Peterson's world music show Worldwide on BBC one in May 2004. Philippe Cohen Solal has also released a DJ set: Inspiracion, Espiracion (P. Cohen Solal DJ Mix) (2004). This album is a compilation of classic tangos from the likes of Anibal Troilo and Astor Piazzolla and Gotan Project remixes. The album also includes a bonus CD with the track La Cruz del Sur - which was meant to be included on La Revancha del Tango, but didn't make the cut in 2001.
Their last album Tango 3.0 was released on April 19, 2010.
The name of the trio comes from a form of wordplay very common in Rioplatense Spanish's argot named vesre. This wordplay involves the reversal of syllables. Thus, the word 'Tan-go' becomes 'Go-tan', the name the trio have chosen for their project.
Tango Canción
Gotan Project Lyrics

desilusión
en los vaivenes de un tango canción
Mina que pianta
sin avisar
y otra vez en curda para olvidar
pensando en vos
Tanta tristeza
tanta emoción
en el infierno de tu traición
Un desencuentro
ganas de llorar
pudo París en invierno otro poema inspirar
The lyrics of Gotan Project's song Tango Cancion are powerful and convey a range of emotions related to heartbreak and betrayal. The first two lines set the tone, describing the singer's soul being weighed down with sorrow and disappointment. "En los vaivenes de un tango canción" refers to the unpredictability and twists and turns of life, compared to the movements and rhythms of a tango.
The following lines introduce Mina, a woman who suddenly leaves without warning. The phrase "pianta" is an Argentinian slang term for someone who runs away or leaves quickly. The singer then turns to alcohol ("en curda") as a means of forgetting the pain and moving on.
The next segment is focused on the addressee, with the singer revealing that they have spent their whole life thinking about them. The lines "Tanta tristeza/tanta emoción" capture the intensity and complexity of their feelings towards the addressee, while "en el infierno de tu traición" suggests that the singer has been deeply hurt or wronged.
The final two lines introduce the idea that this heartbreak could inspire a poem even in the depths of winter. This is perhaps a nod to the rich and complex tradition of tango music and poetry in Argentina, and how even moments of pain and sadness can lead to creative expression.

I just want to dance with a beautiful respectful woman to this song in a candle lit room as the moonlight shines through the windows of our highly elevated top floor we are in. Seeing her perfectly elegant presence love my essence through her body language. If this was my soul mate I'd make sure every birthday of mine we'd have this dance till we grow old.
