Gotan Project ft. Yann Tiersen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When I'm asleep in Cascade Street
I don't, I don't
See anything
When I'm asleep in Cascade Street
When I'm asleep in Cascade Street
I hear, I hear Nothing, nothing
In the cascade, in the cascade
You washed me
When I wake up in Cascade Street
When I wake up in Cascade Street
I feel nothing
I feel nothing
When I'm asleep in Cascade Street
When I'm asleep in Cascade Street
I don't remember
I don't remember
In the cascade, in the cascade
You washed me
When I wake up in Cascade Street
When I wake up in Cascade Street
I feel nothing
I feel nothing
In the cascade, in the cascade
You washed me
The lyrics of Gotan Project's "Rue Des Cascades" with Yann Tiersen reflect a sense of detachment and disconnect from the world around the persona. The repeating lines of "When I'm asleep in Cascade Street...I don't see anything," and "I hear nothing, nothing" indicate a feeling of numbness or isolation. The persona seems to be disconnected from their surroundings and perhaps, even their own self.
The verse, "In the cascade, in the cascade, you washed me," stands out in the midst of the repetitiveness. This line seems to suggest that the persona is seeking solace or a sense of connection from the cascade, a series of small waterfalls, that is featured in the song title. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for a search for transcendence or spiritual cleansing through nature.
The final verse is a repetition of the melody and the lines "When I wake up in Cascade Street, I feel nothing, I feel nothing," indicating that the persona's sense of detachment continues even when they wake up. The final line, "In the cascade, in the cascade, you washed me," offers a sense of hope or resolution, suggesting that perhaps the persona is finding some solace in the cascade. Overall, the lyrics of "Rue Des Cascades" are open to interpretation and could be understood in numerous ways, perhaps reflecting a universal sense of disconnection and search for connection.

The thing is, this was the song that introduced me to who would become one of the most important figures to me. Walking down the actual street for the first time was trully and remarkable experience that I will never forget.
