C'est La Vie
Gotthard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They say "cʼest la vie"
With a pat on a shoulder
Do they know what you need?
Or am I getting older?
So much I remember
Yesterday just surrendered
Those words "just let it be"
And you say, say, say
"Donʼt you take my dreams away"
That youʼll change, change, change
That youʼll change the world but tomorrow
But tomorrow

Who said "cʼest la vie"
To the little toy soldier?
How hard can it be?
Even when it gets colder
Take a walk on the water, take a walk on the moon
Who said "just let it sleep"?

And you say, say, say
"Donʼt you take my dreams away"
That youʼll change, change, change
That youʼll change the world but tomorrow
But tomorrow

And so many chances can pass you by
Maybe just a matter of trying
'Cause, there ainʼt no mistaking how time goes by
Some say remember
Some say forget
Some say it matters
Some just regret

But I say, say, say
I wonʼt take your dreams away
And youʼll change, change, change
And youʼll change the world but tomorrow
Oh, change the world but tomorrow
But tomorrow you gonna change the world
You gonna change the world

You gonna change the world

Overall Meaning

Gotthard's song C'est La Vie reflects on the fleeting nature of time and the universal struggle to pursue our dreams while navigating the uncertainty that comes with life. The song begins with the phrase "c'est la vie", meaning "that's life", which is offered as a platitude to ease the pain of a situation. However, the singer questions whether such words provide sufficient comfort, or whether they simply reveal a resignation to the inevitable decline of our lives. He looks back on a past that is surrendered and wonders whether he is getting too old to pursue his dreams.

The refrain of the song is a plea not to let go of one's dreams, even as time passes. The singer acknowledges that change is possible, but recognizes its obstacles and limitations. He invokes the image of a toy soldier to suggest that, no matter how small or insignificant we may feel, we can still find the strength to face the challenges we encounter. He encourages us to "take a walk on the water, take a walk on the moon", suggesting that we should not limit ourselves to what we think we can achieve, but instead push the boundaries of what is possible.

The final lines of the song express hope and determination that we can make a difference in the world, even if it takes time. The singer affirms that he will not give up on his dreams, and encourages others to do the same. The song's overarching message is one of resilience, reminding us that while life may be uncertain, our dreams and aspirations are the things that give our lives meaning and purpose.
