Eyes Wide Open
Gotye Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

With our eyes wide open, we
With our eyes wide open, we

So this is the end of the story,
Everything we had, everything we did,
Is buried in dust,
And this dust is all that's left of us.
But only a few ever worried.

Well the signs were clear, they had no idea.
You just get used to living in fear,
Or give up when you can't even picture your future.

We walk the plank with our eyes wide open.

We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we)
Yeah, we walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open.)

Some people offered up answers.
We made out like we heard, they were only words.
They didn't add up to a change in the way we were living,
And the saddest thing is all of it could have been avoided.

But it was like to stop consuming is to stop being human,
You'll want to make a change if you won't.
We're all in the same boat, staying afloat for the moment.

We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we)
Yeah we walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open.)
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open,
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open,
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we

With our eyes wide open, we walk the plank, we walk the plank.
With our eyes wide open, we walk the plank, we walk the plank, we walk the plank.
With our eyes wide open, we walk the plank, we walk the plank.

That was the end of the story.

Overall Meaning

The song "Eyes Wide Open" by Gotye serves as a commentary on society's tendency towards complacency and inaction in the face of looming crises, be it societal or environmental. According to the lyrics, we are all walking the plank with our eyes wide open, which means that we are all aware of the problems surrounding us yet we continue to ignore them while going through the motions of everyday life.

The song suggests that many of us have resigned ourselves to accepting the status quo, even though we know deep down that significant changes must be made. The "dust" referred to in the lyrics represents the detritus of our lives and our failure to take the necessary steps to improve the world for future generations. We continue to consume without thinking about the consequences, and as a result, the problems continue to pile up.

Gotye also points out that there have been people who have tried to offer solutions, but their words often fall on deaf ears. The song mourns the fact that we have become so accustomed to living in fear and uncertainty that we are unable to envision a better future. The last line of the song, "That was the end of the story," suggests that it may be too late to make a significant difference, and that we may all be fated to walk the plank with our eyes wide open.

"Eyes Wide Open"

[Hook]
With our eyes wide open, we...
With our eyes wide open, we...

[Verse 1]
So this is the end of the story
Everything we had, everything we did
Is buried in dust, and this dust is
All that's left of us left of us
And only a few ever worried

While the signs were clear, they had no idea
You just get use to livin' in fear
Or give up, when you can't even picture your future

We walk the plank, with our eyes wide open

[Chorus: Call and (response)]
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank, with our eyes wide open, we)
Yeah we walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank, with our eyes wide open, we)

[Verse 2]
And some people offered up answers
We made out we like we heard
They were only words
They didn't add up, to a change in the way we were living (it)
And the saddest thing, is all of it could've been avoided

But it was like to stop consuming's to stop being human
And why'd I make a change if you won't
We're all in the same, boat, stayin' afloat for the moment moment moment

[Chorus]
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(Walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we)
Yeah we walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we
(We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we)
We walk the plank with our eyes wide, we
We walk the plank with our eyes wide, we
We walk the plank with our eyes wide, we
Mmmm hmmm mmm

[Hook]
(With our eyes wide open)
We, walk the plank, we walk the plank
(With our eyes wide open)
We, walk the plank, we walk the plank, we walk the plank
(With our eyes wide open)
We, walk the plank, we walk the plank
(With our eyes wide open)

And that is the end of the story

@theharshtruthoutthere

To all who believe that lie, which says, Masons have no power:

That dear soul is a clear lie, they still busy doing whatever they are doing (biblically deceiving mankind) and still they have the same if not even more power.

The masons haven+t gone nowhere, their club just in the late 20th century and early 21st century, exploded, meaning went bigger by many souls who became the sell outs. That`s the only reason we have TV s in our homes and the entertainments, through music , movies, sports.

If, as you seem to believe, masons power has gone down the drain, then our so loved TVs won´t show of any kind of picture. It then will be just a pointless box. There be then no daily news.
And there WON´T be then any kind of money in use.

Yep, that`s the picture i will get if the masons power have truly gone down the train.
Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Without the masons nor the death club of freemasonry, there be not a single soul who`s sell out nor will there be any reason nor a chance to become one.

SOULS, SEARCH: BIBLE + FREEMASONRY.
Colossians 2:8
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
John 8:32
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Hosea 4:6
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

And remember souls:
This world was never what we thought it was, nor it will never be what we wish it be.

Gotye's voice was unironically really good, I wish he would come back

@samgomez9942

Yeah whatever happened to that guy anyways?

@scabietron1438

Sam Gomez sadly he was only recognized for somebody that I used to know even tho he makes other great music

@samgomez9942

@@scabietron1438 Yeah I have to be honest, "somebody that I used to know" was the only song I knew from him. But I recently got it stuck in my head and decided to relisten to it for the first time in years (since that's how I get songs out of my head) and decided to see if he had other music, and I like it.
