Somebody That I Used To Know
Gotye Lyrics

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know, that I used to know, I used to know somebody

This song in itself is already absolutely incredible, and I'm sure you already know why. But something I'd also like to mention is how incredible this clip is and how perfectly this fits the song.

We spend the first half with Gotye's verse setting up his side of the story, as a picture of his life is painted with him integrated into it.

Then it cuts to Kimbra's part, we find out someone else is in the painting, but then she slowly moves, and begins revealing her side of the story, breaking the illusion the painting had set up both figuratively and literally.

Then my favorite part. The chorus kicks in and she yells passionately, and as she does you can see Gotye's face turn into one of frustration, furrowing his brows. The sequence then becomes Gotye singing the chorus as Kimbra continues to yell at him, and at times softens her voice, almost like she softens emotionally for a moment, before her anger comes back and she starts yelling again. The thing I found amazing is that she's staring straight at him, but he doesn't look at her back as he sings the chorus, a literal representation that he isn't listening to her. He doesn't want to hear her side of the story, because he wants to keep believing he's in the right, and his singing almost seems like him trying to sing over her, drown her out, to convince himself what he's saying is true, while she tries to argue with him.

Once the chorus is over, she gives up, realizes he's not worth fighting with, and finally walks off. The moment she does, he finally looks at her. The moment she's gone. As if in the very last second he had a change of mind, regretting his behavior, and wanted to see her one more time, but now it's too late for that. He calls out for her, singing, and she stares at the wall, her paint slowly coming off of her, representing her, in the literal sense, getting out of the picture. She's out of his life now. He keeps looking at her as the paint is coming off, and she looks back at the last second, in the form of a final goodbye.

[Verse 1: Gotye]
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me

[Verse 2: Gotye]
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well, you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

[Chorus: Gotye]
But you didn't have to cut me off

[Verse 3: Kimbra]
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

[Outro: Gotye]
Somebody (I used to know)
Somebody (Now you're just somebody that I used to know)
Somebody (I used to know)
Somebody (Now you're just somebody that I used to know)
(I used to know)
(That I used to know)
(I used to know)
Somebody

this song really hits...
if you've ever experienced a relationship in which you've been lied to, manipulated, and used to just be thrown aside when they're finished taking advantage of you.

Most, if not all of my past relationships are literally just
"somebody that I used to know..."

still happily single here, at 37.
Seriously doubt I'll ever trust anyone
because of all those somebodies.
