Love Is The Drug
Grace Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Aggravated - spare for days,
Stroll downtown the red light place,
Jump up bubble up - what in store,
Love is the drug and I need to score,

Showing out, showing out, hit and run,
Boy meets girl and the beat goes on,
Stitched up tight, can't shake free,
Love is the drug, got a hook on me,

Oh oh catch that buzz,
Love is the drug that I thinking of,
Yeah, can you see?
Love is the drug for me,

ain't no big thing,
To wait for the bell to ring,
Ain't no big thing,
The toll of the bell,

Late that night I park my car,
Stake my place in the singles bar,
Face to face, toe to toe,
Heart to heart as we hit the floor,

Lumber up, limbo down,
The locked embrace, the stumble round,
I say go, he say yes,
Dim the lights, you can guess the rest,

Yeah, catch that buzz,
Love is the drug that I thinking of,
Yeah, can you see?
Love is the drug for me,

ain't no big thing,
To wait for the bell to ring,
Ain't no big thing,
The toll of the bell,

Aggravated - spare for days,

Love is the drug that I thinking of,
Yeah, can you see?
Love is the drug for me, Oh,

ain't no big thing,
To wait for the bell to ring,
Ain't no big thing,
The toll of the bell,

Yeah, catch that buzz,
Love is the drug that I thinking of,
Oh yeah, can you see?
Love is the drug for me,

Gota get that buzz/drug,

Give it to me, baby, (?)
Got to have it.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Grace Jones’ “Love Is The Drug” describe the craving for a specific type of love, one that is akin to being addicted to a drug. The song begins with the feeling of being “aggravated” and having a longing that couldn’t be satisfied. The singer then heads to the “red light place” downtown hoping to find something that would cure their need. The lyrics then touch on the casual nature of relationships in the bar scene, with people “showing out” and “hit and run” encounters.

The chorus, “catch that buzz, love is the drug that I’m thinking of, yeah can’t you see, love is the drug for me” reinforces the idea of love being an addictive substance. The singer sings about this craving being stronger than the wait for the bell to ring, which is often used as a metaphor for waiting for a signal to begin something. Finally, the lyrics touch on the desperation of the singer’s search, with them saying “gotta get that buzz/drug” and “give it to me baby, got to have it.”

Overall, the lyrics of “Love Is The Drug” portray a picture of a desperate search for love, one that is akin to a drug addiction. The singer is searching for a fix, and will do whatever it takes to get it.

Mostrando a cabo, mostrando hacia fuera, golpear y correr
Chico conoce a chica, como Beat Goes On
Oh, oh, no puedo verte
Cara a cara, cara a cara
Oh, oh, no puedo verte
Oh, oh, no puedo verte
El amor es la droga para mí...

This is an underrated MASTERPIECE!!! Shame on the Internet culture for ignoring this.

The Algorithm brought me here ... maybe now is the time

@kyachdistent1301

They spent the whole 80s ignoring ALL the best stuff. Didn't you know?

@paolo3087

@Kyach Distent how right you are, a quantity of gems were there in plein sight, but the majority loved trash. I think 1984 was the year rubbish took over. By the way this is a superlative cover from Roxy Music - Brian Ferry 1975 and yes, I was there.

@kyachdistent1301

@Paolo Yep, but I wouldn't say 1984. Granted slagdonna, worst plague of the world allowed to appear and stay, but that bas** from hell began it's evil dominion truly by 1985, also Pete Waterman's scourge on music appeared, so between these two, no wonder things went truly south by 1988 (the year we could all tell we were in trouble). In all fairness though, there was crap around every year of the 80s but it never took over. Plenty of good people making records in 1984, with some cool ones still not appearing yet, but many of the best are always making albums and songs that get little attention from the mainstream. The so-called Top 40 of TOTP is not a proper representation of proper music of the 80s, nor is any radio station when it pretends to cater for it. 1984 brought us Alphaville, one of the best acts around, but as Germans, never given a fair crack of the whip, same with Sandra for the next year. 1990 was the year it became clear music had died. Then when things didn't so much as change or even stay the awful same when the millennium came but got even WORSE, well. It's no wonder we all go back to live our lives audibly in the past music-wise.

@Kyach Distent In America yes, but not in Europe. She had many top 40 hits in Europe

What a fearsomely talented woman. Frightening and alluring at the same time. She's like a piece of architecture.
