"Maneater"
Grace Mitchell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She'll only come out at nights
The lean and hungry type
Nothing is new
I've seen her here before
Watching and waiting
She's sittin' with you
But her eyes are on the door
So many have paid to see
What you think you're gettin' for free
The woman is wild
A she-cat tamed by the purr of a Jaguar
Money's the matter
If you're in it for love
You ain't gonna get too far

Oh oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh oh, here she comes
She's a maneater
Oh oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh oh, here she comes
She's a maneater

I wouldn't if I were you
I know what she can do
She's deadly man
And she could really rip your world apart
Mind over matter
The beauty is there but a beast is in the heart

Oh oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh-oh, here she comes
She's a maneater
Oh oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh oh, here she comes
She's a maneater

Oh oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh oh, here she comes
She's a maneater
Oh-oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh oh, here she comes
She's a maneater

Oh oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
Oh oh, here she comes
She's a maneater
Oh oh, here she comes
Watch out boy she'll chew you up

Oh oh, here she comes
She's a maneater

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Grace Mitchell's song "Maneater" are about a woman who is dangerous and unpredictable, and the warning signs that those around her should be aware of. The persona of the song describes this woman as a "lean and hungry type," and "deadly man" warning other men to stay away from her. Despite her beauty, there is a "beast in her heart" that can rip a man's world apart.

The song also references the idea of men paying to see the woman, and thinking they will get something for free. It suggests that money is the main driving force for this woman, and seeking love or affection from her will lead to disappointment. The lyrics are a cautionary tale about the dangers of pursuing someone who may be using others for personal gain.

Overall, "Maneater" is a powerful and empowering song that encourages listeners to be cautious and aware of those around them. It is a reminder to prioritize self-preservation and to not get caught up in dangerous situations or relationships.

I always loved Hall & Oates 1982 original, but I find Mitchell's remake very respectable. I love the atmospheric instrumentals and the female spin on this.. Thanks for posting this.
