I kinda like how ultimately this song doesn't "pick a side". It's not just about "female empowerment", there are women who like more traditionally feminine roles and prefer to rely on their partners, who don't like to make the first move, while there are women who enjoy taking control. There are guys who are more protective and feel loved when their opinions are given worth and attention, and guys who don't feel as strongly. Ultimately it's about balance within the relationship, so long as neither side abuses that trust and upsets that balance, it's okay.

Something I didn’t realize when I was younger: The movie the main characters got stuck in was made in the 60’s, and as we know women/men were more traditional back then; Hence why Lela and Tanner seem to be going for a more “traditional gender roles” approach, while Brady and McKenzie are open to thinking outside of that old “norm”. Love that little contrast.

It's not progressive at all though. Since the entire movie takes place in the 60s it shows the sexism of the 60s in everyday activities and dating. All it shows that could be considered "progressive" is when Brady and Mac compare things to how they are in modern day, which isn't sexist.
