The Miner
Grace Potter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You got a hunger for my heart
You say there's diamonds in my eyes
And as I hold you in my arms
I let you bleed me dry

I don't understand what you do
Why you hurt the one who loves you
I feel you mining in my bones, I feel you digging in my soul

Oh, oh, oh
Oh-oh, you're taking so much
I'm breaking down
So go on, keep taking more
Till everything is gone
You're breaking me down
You're breaking me down

And you can see it in my eyes
I'm sleepless even in the dark
And my fingers trace the lines
Where I used to have a heart

I don't understand what you do
Why you hurt the one who loves you
I feel you mining in my bones
I feel you digging in my soul
Oh, oh, oh

And oh oh, you're taking so much
I'm breaking down
Go on, keep taking more
Till everything is gone
You're breaking me down

Oh, oh, you're taking so much
I'm breaking down
So go on, keep taking more
Till everything is gone
You're breaking me down

You're breaking me down
You're breaking me down

Overall Meaning

The song "The Miner" by Grace Potter is a powerful and emotional song that explores the idea of being drained and broken by love. The lyrics describe a relationship in which one person is constantly taking from the other, leaving them feeling empty and drained. The metaphor of mining is used to emphasize the idea that the person is digging deep into the singer's soul and taking everything they have to offer. The chorus repeats the line "you're taking so much, I'm breaking down", emphasizing the physical and emotional toll that this relationship is taking on the singer.

The second verse of the song emphasizes the singer's struggle to understand why their partner continues to hurt them when they love them so deeply. The image of the singer tracing the lines where they used to have a heart is particularly poignant, emphasizing the idea that the constant taking is leaving them hollow and broken.

Overall, "The Miner" is a powerful exploration of the negative impact that a one-sided relationship can have on a person. Through vivid metaphors and emotive lyrics, Grace Potter captures the sense of exhaustion and emotional trauma that can come from being in a relationship with someone who takes more than they give.

Her voice is so wise and not overdone amazing. Thank god we still have people representing some good music.

+Aimsstar Yeah. But search Stop the Bus by GP and listen to that. They were just in a different (better) league then. Sighs.

Another one of my favorites off the album, and some of the best lyrics IMO. Right off the bat, if you can imagine a Hammond organ and drums instead of keyboards and drum machine, it's not hard to see that the songwriting chops are still there and that this album is getting some push-back in part because of the instrumentation and arrangement. Otherwise this could have easily fit on many of her previous albums.

@ltypd

Will Rose  I agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, this is one of the few songs on the new album that can be said for. As for the totally overwrought production one need look no further than her live performance of this song on radio station WXPN to realize that sometimes less is more.

@mrwhitford1966

+Will Rose Yeah you are on to something there re Hammond and live drums vs muzak crap. That's the problem for me I fear. But good point nonetheless. Just not the same and its a shame when it was SO great. Now its just kinda good. Sucks.
