somebody to love
Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And all the joy within you dies
(Chorus)
Don't you want somebody to love
Don't you need somebody to love
Wouldn't you love somebody to love
You better find somebody to love
When the garden's flowers, baby, are dead
Yes, and your mind, your mind is so full of red
(Chorus)
Your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his
Yeah but in your head, baby
I'm afraid you don't know where it is
(Chorus)
Tears are running, they're all running down your breast
And your friends, baby, they treat you like a guest
(Chorus)
The lyrics in Somebody to Love touch on themes of disillusionment and the search for meaning and connection in life. The first verse speaks to the idea that sometimes what we believe to be true turns out to be false, and that realization can be gut-wrenching, robbing us of joy and meaning. The chorus offers a simple prescription for this feeling of loneliness and disappointment - find somebody to love. The singer implores the listener to seek out connection and togetherness as a way to combat the pain of living in a world where reality can be difficult to accept.
The second verse speaks to the idea that even when beauty surrounds us - in this case, a a garden full of flowers - it can be hard to appreciate it when our minds are clouded with negativity or anxiety. The images of red in the lyrics suggest anger or danger, further emphasizing the idea that our emotional state can color our perception of the world around us. The final verse speaks to the idea that even our closest relationships can fail us - our partners can resemble someone we loved and lost but the connection might be missing. Ultimately, the message of the song is that we all need somebody to love, and that the search for love and connection is a necessary part of the human experience.

I lost my wife of 45 years a year ago. I went through a few rejections while trying to find another relationship to fill the void. I was needy. After the last rejection I discovered that loving somebody was where the real pleasure was, not being loved by somebody. Then into my head came "somebody to love". I looked up Grace Slick here and played "Somebody To Love" and started crying with relief and understanding.

Yes, having somebody to love is a lot more important than being loved. I've loved this song since I first heard it when I was 12 years old. But I didn't understand it until more than half a century later.
