Amelie
Gracie Abrams Lyrics

She sort of ripped me open
She doesn't even know it
She doesn't know my name
We sat on the sofa
She asked me a million questions
I answered and by eleven
Memorized her face
Where did you go
Amelie, Amelie, Amelie?
Where'd you go?
Or were you all in a dream
Amelie, Amelie?
I don't know
Why'd it feel louder
When all of it went unspoken?
All I can do is hope that
This will go away
She had her hair up
She cried about her obsessions
But she doesn't know I'd let her
Ruin all my days
Where did you go
Amelie, Amelie, Amelie?
Where'd you go?
Or were you all in a dream
Amelie, Amelie?
I don't know
Where did you go
Amelie, Amelie, Amelie?
Where'd you go?Or were you all in a dream
Amelie, Amelie?
Tell me no
Tell me more, I would give all my time
All your words felt like a nursery rhyme
Comfortable, handing you my whole life
When all your words felt like a funeral rite
So where did you go
Amelie, Amelie, Amelie?
Where'd you go?
Or were you all in a dream
Amelie, Amelie?
I don't know, oh
Where did you go
Amelie, Amelie, Amelie?
Where'd you go?
Or were you all in a dream
Amelie, Amelie?
I don't know
So where did you go
Amelie, Amelie, Amelie?
Where'd you go?
Or were you all in a dream
Amelie, Amelie?
I don't know, oh
Where did you go
Amelie, Amelie, Amelie?
Where'd you go?
Or were you all in a dream
Amelie, Amelie?
Tell me no
Gracie Abrams’s song “Amelie” is a melancholic ballad about a short-lived encounter with someone who had a profound impact on her. The opening lines describe how the girl “sort of ripped” her open, signifying the intensity of the emotions she felt. However, the girl is oblivious to the impact she has on the singer’s life and doesn’t even know her name. The second stanza describes how the two sat on the sofa, and the girl asked the singer several questions that she answered by eleven, but she “memorized her face.” These lines further highlight that the girl had left an indelible impression on her life.
The chorus repeats “where did you go” and “Amelie” several times with the lead character expressing her confusion and attempts to find answers to the questions that haunt her. The latter part of the song's lyrics indicate that the girl shared her life's intimate details and obsessions with the singer, but she doesn't realize the impact she's had. The song's conflicting feelings of intense emotions and sadness are also evident in the lines: “All your words felt like a nursery rhyme/ Comfortable, handing you my whole life/ When all your words felt like a funeral rite.” These emotions further accentuate the conflicting emotions of attraction and broken-heartedness.
Overall, “Amelie” is an evocative song that explores the profound impact short-lived encounters can have on people's lives, and their aftermath can leave a lasting impact on an individual long after they're gone.

3:04 i love the very very subtle change in tone when she says 'amelie' here. it's so hard to catch but it sounds like she's expressing more frustration after trying to act okay and neutral for so long. it's just that she adds a bit more of a push when she sings "where did you GO, AMELIE, amelie"
