Fault Line
Gracie Abrams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You could go and I won't even feel it
Wouldn't hold up the road when you're leaving
You're a bad holiday
You're the drug that I take
When I want to forget how I'm feeling

I know you're a fault line
But I'll break too
Cracking at the same time
Does it shock you?
When I'm down
I fall right back to you, it happens
I know you're a fault line
But I'll break too
I'll break too

You could go and I bet I'd recover
Overnight, finish hurting each other
You feel light years away
If I met you today
I would run to the arms of another

I know you're a fault line
But I'll break too
Cracking at the same time
Does it shock you?
When I'm down
I fall back into you, it happens
I know you're a fault line
But I'll break too (mm, mm-hmm)
I'll break too

And all my imaginary friends are scared of you
I've gone and cried to them in our bedroom
Most nights I will pretend
I left this sooner

But I know you're a fault line
But I'll break too
Cracking at the same time
Does it shock you?
When I'm down
I fall back in to you, it happens
I know you're a fault line
But I'll break too
I'll break too

I'll break too
I'd break too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Fault Line" by Gracie Abrams deal with a complicated and painful relationship. The song expresses the desire to move on from a toxic relationship, but also the difficulty of actually doing so. The first verse addresses the fact that the singer's partner doesn't seem to have much of an impact on her life - she wouldn't "even feel it" if they were to leave. However, despite this, the partner still has a hold over her, described as being like a drug that she takes to forget how she's feeling.

The chorus of the song describes the singer as knowing that her partner is a "fault line" - someone who is likely to cause an earthquake or disrupt her life - but that she will break too. The line "Cracking at the same time" suggests that the ending of the relationship will be difficult for both parties. The singer acknowledges that she keeps returning to her partner, even when she's down, and that it seems inevitable. The second verse speaks to the idea that the singer would be happier without her partner, but that she finds it difficult to actually leave - even though they "hurt each other," it seems like they are stuck in a pattern.

The final lines of the song speak to the loneliness and pain that is felt when you are in a relationship that you know is bad for you. The singer references imaginary friends who are "scared" of her partner, and admits that most nights she wishes she had left sooner. Despite all of this, however, she still loves her partner and is fearful of being alone. The song ends on the repeated refrain that the singer will "break too," implying that she is aware of the potential consequences of staying with her partner, but feels helpless to change the situation.

good riddance is not just an album. it's truly a blessing. it brought out the words we never got to word out. it's a gift from your loved ones. in this case, gracie. it's the heart that keeps us going even if it crushes your soul to listen to. it's oxygen. it's a hug from gracie through music. an invicible love from her to us, from us to her ♡

"when i'm down, i fall back into you, it happens i know you're a fault line, but i'll break too" i am quite literally never recovering

@sagegreen_05

this bridge really hits hard. especially the line “most nights i will pretend i left this sooner” because it’s so painfully relatable. my relationship with my ex-girlfriend was rough. i really regret not leaving sooner because she was awful to me and did things that i will never get over. thank you gracie, for an album that i felt really spoke to me.
