Allwright traveled to France in the early 1950's and married Catherine Dasté. His son Christophe Allwright, is a French comedian.
In the early '60s, Allwright sang at a number of clubs in Paris, folk music that was very big in the 60s. He wrote his own music, and created the French language versions of many songs by US and Canadian artists like Tom Paxton ("Sacrée Bouteille" "Qu'as tu appris à l'école?"), Leonard Cohen ("Suzanne") and Pete Seeger ("Jusqu' à la ceinture").
His earlier music focused more on social protest songs. As he matured as an artist, his songs became more personal, and his choice in material included more funny songs, songs with a mystical bent ("Garder le Souvenir", "Lumière"), and songs about the complexities of relationships ("No Man's Land"). Some of his songs are in English, but the vast majority are in French.
He has travelled extensively, to the Himalayas, Réunion Island, and Madascar, among other places. He was strongly influenced by the Indian master and teacher Sri Aurobino, which is reflected in the mystical qualities of some of his songs.
In 2005, he wrote new lyrics for the French National Anthem, "La Marseillaise".

Graeme Allwright’s La Réunion tells the story of a small island that was once untouched by man, but gradually destroyed by mankind. The song starts with a description of the island’s natural beauty, evoking the idea of paradise before the fall. There were “tortoises sleeping in the shade of palm trees,” “birds singing in the sky,” and “rivers flowing through the flowery mountains”. All was peaceful and perfect in this world that man had yet to touch. Nevertheless, one day, man arrived on the island, with his mercantile spirit and started destroying everything in his path.
The man cut down trees for wood, hunted and ate the tortoises and birds, and polluted the once pure rivers. Over time, people of all races and colors came to the island to work, to make it "better". However, despite the two centuries of work, the man was still destroying nature, and today the small island is now a costly strategic base that has lost its natural beauty.
La Réunion embodies environmental awareness and reflects the impact of humankind on the planet. The song ends with a dream of a better and more united world, free from the past and its bitterness. The lyrics show how man’s greed and commercial interests have led to the destruction of the natural world and the irreparable damage it has caused.
